I Think I'm Going To College? In Scotland?!
Chapter 4
Oh my god I can't believe this news. I literally just can't believe it.
Tonks has been taking care of me for the last two weeks, taking me to school and everything. She's a respectable sort of adult, dignified and kind, but I can tell she isn't really built to take care of a kid. She appreciates my independence.
Anyways one day after school she sat me down and talked to me about potentially going to school in Scotland. She asked me how I would feel about it and I've always wanted to go to Europe, especially the U.K., so of course I said yes!! Like, Oxford has been my dream school for forever.
But then I started actually thinking about it. I have no money and my mom's pretty broke. All my friends are over here in the U.S. I was planning on going to college, being covered by need-based financial aid, and I've maintained decent grades and participated in a lot of extracurriculars here in the U.S. to do so. It's been especially hard because a lot of random shit has happened at school that inevitably gets blamed on me.
Like once, a kid stole my brand new graphing calculator that my friend's parents got me for my birthday, and his fingers began to bleed red. The stuff stained his hands, creeping up his wrists. It looked a hell of a lot like blood but it definitely wasn't because he wasn't in any pain. But he screamed in shock and told people I cut him anyways (which, by the way, was impossible. I was like, across the room. The nurse washed the shit away and said he wasn't cut, but people at school are careful around me now.)
All of that shit has led me to be extremely careful and intentional about my reputation at school. Being uprooted and drop-shipped to the U.K. wouldn't be easy and I'd have to start all over again. It barely sounds feasible.
I explained my concerns to Tonks, but she said where there's a will there's a way, and to think about the possibility for a moment. She asked if I would feel comfortable going if money isn't really a concern, and if she can guarantee it's a good school that will help my future career prospects. And she said I can keep in contact with my current friends. That sounded too good to be true, and I told her so. But I had to admit that it sounded amazing. It sounded like paradise.
Well, guess what?!
Today, after school, Tonks gave me a letter. And it was a fucking admissions letter. TO FUCKING HOGWARTS !!!!
I CAN'T CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT!!! I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT'S REAL!!! LIKE I LITERALLY READ ABOUT HARRY POTTER WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND NOW I'M GOING??? TO HOGWARTS?????
Tonks explained everything to me: how in his old age, Potter got a bit senile and went and told Rowling about the wizarding world before anyone caught him. No one from the wizarding world knew he spilled the beans until the first Harry Potter book was published, and by then it was too late. As a published fiction novel, no one really suspected anything, and Rowling thought the old man had made it all up in his head. So the Ministry of Magic just... let the series be. There's already plenty of books about magic anyways, what's one more? No one was any closer to believing in Hogwarts or revealing the wizarding world. Plus, many of Potter's stories were exagerrated or falsified. No real danger ever presented itself.
But Hogwarts has continued to admit students. So has the North American Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where I was actually considered a few years back. Apparently they disqualified me when I was younger because I wasn't exhibiting enough magical power, although Tonks told me that's bullshit and she believes I simply have super good control over it. Tonks says Ilvermorny is weird and a bit overrun with capitalistic ideals, then immediately told me to never tell anyone she said that. So Ilvermorny wasn't open to admitting me post-disqualification, likely because of my financial situation. Tonks muttered "capitalist pigs" under her breath and I realized I really like her.
But apparently Tonks is only in North America for work (she wouldn't tell me what kind of work), and the Hogwarts Headmaster owes her a favor. She pulled some strings, and got me admitted with a multitude of scholarships, both need-based and merit, that will fully cover my predicted Cost of Attendance (COA). I don't know how but the madwoman actually got me admitted into Hogwarts.
Although I'll be sad to leave my friends (and I do already miss them!), I'm so excited to start anew. Scotland is gorgeous and Hogwarts is a brilliant university. Tonks even told me I could stay with her over the summer. She's going to get everything set up and have a cover story for my mom and for CPS. She's even been teaching me a little bit about how to use magic, although mostly it's about controlling the lights so I stop flicking them on and off (apparently I'm the problem and not the lights?!)
I'm going to try to work hard and look forward to some amazing years in university. There's a lot I have to catch up on as a late admit, so I have to join a younger class, but apparently there's a possibility of catching up if I study hard and take extra lessons. I hope I can catch up to my year!
I'm so excited to go to Hogwarts and I'm honestly shell-shocked that this is even happening to me. I don't know what else to write.
