The Charms Journal Of A First Year Gryffindor

written by [No Name]

This is my Charms journal I used to detail my experiences with the spells learned in my Charms lesson of the week. This shall only be used as a study source for First Year Gryffindors, and those who might come across it. This may be used as a guide to follow as you go through your First Year Charms class. This is not to be used as your own journal, however, as that is an illegal act called plagiarism, which is extremely frowned upon here at Hogwarts. And with that, I urge you to read on, and happy casting!

7/16/15: Lesson One, Week One ~ Wand-Lighting And Wand-Extinguishing Charms ~ Lumos, Nox

Chapter 1

7/16/15

After finishing my first Charms class, I couldn't wait to start practicing. And that's just what I did. It started off just as I expected, I said the wrong spell. The excitement of finally having the oppurtinity to cast a spell was so overwhelming, that I accidentally said the Wand-Extinguishing Charm without even having a light to extinguish yet. I cursed my stupidity and flicked my wand, whilst saying, "Lumos". Nothing happened. I tried again, only to be met with a depressed sigh as I stared at the tip of my wand, which was not alight. I met with the same fate for the three more times I tried it.

Out of frustration, I quickly snatched up Quintessential Magic: An Introduction to Charms by Alexander Quilmane and paged through until I reached Chapter 11: Wand-Lighting & Wand-Extinguishing Charms. I went through the motions of the spell, as listed in the textbook, talking to myself as if I were teaching a toddler to speak. My mistake lied in the movement of the wand. A single counter-clockwise loop was needed to perform the spell. I had been flicking my wand, instead. "Lumos", I said, with a counter-clockwise loop being drawn in the air before me with the tip of my wand. A white glow flickered out of the end of my wand. I glanced at the textbook, reading the information regarding the color of the light. A white glow meant I hadn't used enough willpower in performing this charm. I said, once again, "Lumos", with a more direct and assertive tone and the light immediately shot from a pearly white to a crimson red, periodically brightening, then dulling, as my mind questioned the outcome of the spell. I hadn't done it right. I tried once more. "Lumos", I said, with a casual voice, dropping the assertive tone entirely. The tip of my wand was a golden star. I got the sense immediately that I did something right. There was just something about it that felt that I achieved success.

And now for the Wand-Extinguishing Charm. This I can't possibly mess up. With such a simple spell, it would be embarrassing. I flicked my wand and said, "Nox". And my accomplishment went out like a light. I succeeded.
