Chapter 6

Lesson One:
Today I learned about the Essential Laws and some of the History of Charms, the Discovery of the Wands and I also learned the Wand-Lightning and Wand-Extinguishing charm.
I learned that in the ancient times magic was used more freely and openly than what it is today. Back then, anyone under the age of 17 falls within the guidelines of Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery established in 1875. The Wand-Lightning charm is a simple spell which will illuminate the tip of your wand. To do the Wand-Extinguishing spell you need to keep the wand movement in mind, and don't focus too hard or the tip of your wand will turn a scarlet. Too little charge and it will be a pearly white. You near to aim for a light yellow colour.

Lesson Two:

In our second lesson we learned about the Source of Magic and Flight Charms. Source of Magic is about us and how our magical ability comes along. No one for sure knows where our magical ability comes from but we usually get it from our parents though. There a possibilities that you might become a Squib or you might have no magical ability to use magic but you may be able to detect magical devices. If you are born to 'muggle' parents then you are a witch you are well known us muggle-born. We also learned about Flight Charms. These include, the Floating Charm, Hover Charm, Rocket Charm and the most known, Levitating Charm.
One of the earliest known spells that allowed us to magically move something off the ground is known as the Hover Charm. If you cast this spell on an object it will move up and down. The Hover Charm hasn't got much of a use anymore because of all the more efficient charms.
One of the other charms is called the Rocket Charm. This charm only allows the object to move straight up into the air and down again. The height the object goes relies on the amount of effort you put into it. The heavier the object, the lower the object goes. Like the Hover Charm, this charm has a limited use.
Sometime after the Hover Charm and the Rocket Charm were developed, we learned about the Floating Charm. Unlike the Hover charm, this charm can target a distant object rather than requiring it to have physical contact. Unlike the Rocket Charm, this spell involves controlled vertical movement. if you use this charm your object will only levitate a handful of feet into the air, and they cannot be directed to move any other way besides up and down.
The most common used one nowadays is called the Levitating Charm. The incantation of this charm is called Wingardium Leviosa. It is pronounced 'wing-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa’. This spell allows the caster to move their object, up and down, back and forward and side to side. Levitating something far away can be very difficult. The only known limitation of the Levitation Charm is that it fails to work on humans.
To perform the wand movement (typically called the “Swish and Flick”) raise your wand toward the left and then let it glide gently toward the right, wand tip pointed forward. Then you simply move the tip of your wand back toward your body before flicking it in the direction of your target.

Lesson Three
In lesson 3 we learned about Wand Properties and Movements. The main subjects we learned about were the Wand Properties, Wand Movements, Magical Limitations,Mending charm and the Unlocking charm.
Wand are not living beings. They require someone with magical ability to be used. A wand is as unique as the witch or wizard it chooses. These are some properties of wands.
Wand movement is one of the most essential parts of casting a spell successfully. Really all spell requires some sort of wand movement. Usually if your doing a spell to someone they would just face the wand at the targeted person and say the spell but in a normal spell such as the Levitating spell you need a wand movement. You should practise your wand movements everyday to remember them.
For every spell to want to remember, you need to also remember the wand movement and the precise words of the spell. You may also need to remember to concentrate on the correct thoughts feelings and desires, and even then you may need sufficient power.
There is a spell called the Mending Charm. This spell is used to repare anything that is broken. This spell can't be used on broomsticks and wands. This spell was created by 1754 by Orabella Nuttley, who was a Ministry of Magic employee. She used this spell to repair the Colosseum after a particularly rowdy crowd of rival Quidditch fans began a fight following the match. That's how this spell became famous. The incantation of this charm is Reparo.
Another charm is the Unlocking Charm. This charm can unlock any door from magical to mundane. This spell is also known as the Thief's Friend. The spell, which originated in Africa, was brought to the Wizarding World by Eldon Elsrickle. Blagdon Blay created the counter curse for this charm. The trick to this spell is that you need to focus on the object you’re attempting to unlock and visualize yourself unlocking it as you cast the spell. You also need to make sure that your wand movement is in time with the incantation so at the end of the spell your wand is facing the object you want to unlock.

Lesson Four:
In our fourth lesson we learned about Words and their Power. What we covered in this subject included; Alphabets, Incantations, the Fire-Making Charm and the Locomotion Charm. Language involves the system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and ideas to one another. Even though spoken language was a faster way to communicate, it is actually the written language survives and it can tell us what civilization was like thousands of years ago. Written systems of symbols commonly known as scripts usually take two forms. One being symbols that are singularly complex such as cuneiform and hieroglyphs which require the sophisticated methods of learning to create them and thousands of different symbols that can exist in the language. The other form is called the Alphabet. This is something like a small set of symbols into groupings called 'words', with each word having a different meaning. This is the script that we predominantly see today. The Phoenician Alphabet was the earliest known alphabet. This alphabet dates back to the 1050 B.C. This contains ancient symbols what we see today.
Incantations are usually always one or two words long. Incantations are usually from Latin but they can come from different parts of the world too. It is often said that "words have power," and in our case we can use these words to change the world around us. Not all words have to be magical to have an impact upon others, but it can certainly help. Incantations always need precise pronunciation for the spell to work. If you were to say something that you regret than the person you would be speaking to would probably become confused about what your meaning. Sometimes mispronunciations and result in nothing happening but with other spells you might get a big bang or a backfire. Sometimes these mishaps might lead to sudden explosions. It is essential to learn about incantations their pronunciations when you are learning spells or you are unsure with the pronunciation of a spell.
We learned about the Fire-Making charm. The incantation for this charm is Incendio. In Latin this word means 'fire'. The wand movement for this spell is a curved flick up and down. The movement will sorta look like you are making a flame sort of shape. You need to be very careful when using this sort of spell because it can cause major damage even if the spell is successful. The spell requires a bit of willpower. You also need experience to get the correct movement with the wand and say the pronunciation correctly. The more power you have on the spell the more fire will come out of the wand. This distance this spell can travel is usually dependent upon just how much focus you have used.
The last thing we learned about in lesson four was the Locomotion charm. The incantation of this spell is Locomotor. The pronunciation is ‘LOH-koh-moh-tor’ and the wand movement is a full circle with an upward flick toward the target at the end. In Latin the word 'loco' means place or location and the word 'motor' means to move'. The purpose of the Locomotion charm is to move an object one place to another. This charm can be slightly confusing because it isn't a flight charm. Although the object it affects appears to be flying it is only hovering a few inches above the ground.  Unlike all other types of "flight" charms, the Locomotion Charm allows a minimal amount of vertical movement, just enough for its target to clear the ground.

Lesson Five
In our fifth lesson we learned about Focusing Your Magic. The subjects included in this topic were; Focus, the Severing Charm and the Softening Charm. Focus is an essential part of casting spells. If you don't have focus you won't be able to do you required spell correctly. If you are doing a levitating charm and you are not completly focus on what you want to move then something else in the room might levitate. The hardest part about doing a spell that needs focus is that your mind has to be completely clear and you can only be thinking of the object you have to focus on.
We learned about the Severing Charm. The incantation for this spell is Diffindo. The pronunciation is 'deef-IN-doe’ and the wand movement is a V-Shaped down and up, ending with a swish in the direction to cut. This charm relies heavily on your idea to focus. If you can't focus it will be quite difficult to do this charm. The Severing Charm is not very effective when is comes to animated, living things making it an impratical dueling spell. The worst you could do using this spell on a living thing is give them a scratch or a cut but before you can actually do any harm there are easy counterspells or the Sheild Charm that would stop you from hurting your opponent.
The last topic we learned about was the Softening Charm. The incantation is Spongify. The pronunciation is ‘SPUHN-jee-fye’ and the wand movement is a S-Shaped with a small swish half-way through. This spell is used for making the object a bit squishy and slightly bouncy like some plush toy but it is not soft like the way a soft stuffed animal is. This spell is useless against living matter. If you do use this spell on a living thing, the only thing that would happen would be that you make their hair, nails and fur softer.

Lesson Six
In our sixth lesson of Charms we learned about Applying Your Will. The topics we studied in this subject include; The Matter of Will, we revisited the Levitation Charm and we also learned about the Sticking Charm. Using magic isn't all about getting the proper incantation right or conducting the proper wand movement its also about willpower, concentration and focus. Willpower is mental power. It is somehow similar to how strength represents physical power. For someone who is non-magical, they would think that willpower is simply a measurement of one's ability to control their emotions, avoid bad temptations and make their thoughts and ideas known. For the people with magical abilities they use willpower to perform magic and to make impossibility, possible. Some spells don't need willpower to work. An example of this might be the Wand-Lighting Charm. Other spells such as the Fire-Making spell needs a fair bit of willpower to successfully cast. You always need to be careful because if your using too much willpower, the more violent the backfire will be if your spell fails. Just imagine pushing on a heavy box. That is how willpower will affect you, but in your mind. Always be careful because if you attempt a spell that you haven't really practiced and you use to much magic, you could find yourself we a very bad headache.
We revisited the Levitation Charm. If you want to levitate heavier objects you will have to expand a greater effort of willpower. Make sure you never lose track of what you are focusing on. You don't want to damage anything. If you want to levitate heavier objects, always visualize the magic flowing from you to the object while your performing the swish and flick movement. Nothing. That is the worst thing that would happen if you don't yet possess willpower. Again though, you can inadvertently target something and find that you're not prepared for the results.
We also learned about the Sticking Charm. For this charm, its strength depends directly upon how much willpower you put forth. This charm is used to stick on thing with another. This spell is only temporary. It is not permanent. Willpower is essential for this spell. Even if your willpower is strong enough to make the charm work, it probably won't last very long. To make the charm last long you need to use more magic. A good casting of the spell results in a bond that lasts for around several days or even weeks if the spell was cast well enough.

Lesson Seven:
In our seventh lesson of Charms we learned about Concentration. The topics we studied in this subject were; Concentration, Spell Modifiers, the Sunlight Charm and the Dancing Lights Charm. Concentration is an essential part in casting spells. Concentration is something that you don't often see in spellwork. Focus is similar to concentration, but it is in the moment. At the precise moment you are casting your spell, you need to be focused upon the target.
Concentration can be broken down into two categories:
Concentration involves keeping your mind on the effects of the spell once cast.
Concentration also involves keeping your mind and intent on the target once the spell is cast.
Spell Modifiers are when you say the spell and add an extra word afterward that makes it much easier to target the right thing. This is apparently seen in the Locomotion Charm. Not all spells can be modified such as the Levitation Charm. Sunlight Charm and the Dancing Lights Charm are both modifications of the Wand-Lighting Charm, Lumos.
The Sunlight Charm is described as a very powerful flashlight. When witches or wizards are in a place that is dark, they would usually just say the incantation Lumos and light would appear out of the top of the wand. If you want more light then you should use the Sunlight Charm.
The Sunlight Charm allows you to cast a bright beam of directed light, but the Dancing Lights spell allows you to conjure several smaller lights. This charm is an experimental charm and this charm is great practice for concentration. So many lights can be conjured with this one spell.
