Soon To Be A Student
Chapter 1
I stood outside the hospital. I willed myself to go in, but my feet wouldn't carry me. "Charity, you have to come in at some point, sweetheart," Nathan said, walking towards me from the entry window. There wasn't any sign to tell me, but I knew the red brick meant that this was St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. I took a deep breath and walked through the window of the fake apartment building. The receptionist at the front desk labeled "Inquiries" smiled at me as soon as I walked in. "Good morning, Charity." she said. I smiled back as graciously as I could manage and immediately headed to the fourth floor- Spell Damage.
I arrived in room 350, which was a dimly lit room with only one patient in it, my father. It was very clean, but not Muggle clean. There was barely anything in it, just a device I didn't understand that somehow fed my dad, and a table with the flowers my brother Nathan had bought. No chairs were in the room. When my family normally visited him, we didn't stay for long.
"Hey dad." I said. My brother smiled grimly at my informal hello.
"You see, I'm about to start my first year at Hogwarts. Adrian and I are the only ones going this year. It's so strange, this will be the first year that Andy isn't going. Nathaniel has been doing such a good job at taking care of all of us. His job at the Ministry is going really well, and Andy is hoping to get a job soon as well. My drawings are starting to turn out really well, and I'm very proud of them. I still have that broom you got me a few years ago. Adrian asked one of his teachers if I would be allowed to take it while he was still at school next year, and she said yes. Apparently she's a pretty important lady. I love you dad. I can't wait to see you next time."
I kissed him on the forehead and let go of his hand, which I had been gripping the whole time. Adrian said his goodbyes as well, and we left to go back home.
We got on a dirty Muggle train to get home. The bright lights hurt my eyes, and I hated how many people were always looking at me. It was like they knew I was different, knew my family was different. After less than an hour we arrived back home.
We live in a tall house, but it's pretty normal for a home. On the outside it's painted green, with a bright yellow door. There's not many windows, but there is a huge backyard. We live quite a few miles from other people, so we always get to play Quidditch. We unlocked the front door and walked into the living room. Comfy chairs were the majority of the room, and books were everywhere. We had tons of plants all over different shelves and tables, and the rugs were all colorful and worn. I sat down in my chair, which was bright blue and covered in fuzzy blankets. Two big trunks were in the center of the room, right beside the fireplace. One was had my name on it, and one had Adrian's name on it. Andy and Adrian sat down in their chairs, while my brother Nathan went to make tea.
"I can't believe that only half of us are going to be at Hogwarts now," Andy said, slouching in his orange chair. "I feel like it was just yesterday Adrian was the one going to be a first year."
"I know!" Nathan said, coming into the room with four cups of tea. "All of us are growing up so fast. I guess ever since dad-"
Adrian made a face. They all went quite, glancing over at me.
"Are you serious?" I said. "I'm not stupid. I know what happened. I'm not fragile. You don't have to be afraid of mentioning our father in front of me just because I'm the youngest. It's stupid."
"Charity I'm sorry. You know how much we all love you and hate to see you hurt. I just don't want anyone to mention anything that might bring up feelings in you." Adrian tried to explain.
I rolled my eyes and kissed him on the cheek, "I know. Just please don't do that."
They all nodded quickly. I got up from my chair and took a sip of my tea. I picked up my heavy brown trunk and smiled at my family. "We should go," I said quietly.
Andy got out the green powder. Excitement began to grow in me. I went first, stepping into the fireplace and holding the magical powder in one hand.
"King's Cross Station!" I exclaimed.
I felt my stomach squirm unpleasantly as my body began to to be transported to the train station where I would soon be on my way to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
