Introduction From The Author
Chapter 1
The first idea for this book came in a history classroom in my seventh grade, while we were learning about the medieval life. I instantly became interested in the series of people, and who they reported to, and were controlled by. To me, this seemed like an unjust system, and so I wanted to create a story about someone who was of a lower class becoming someone of a higher class.
Of course, this was almost unheard of in the middle ages, so this is obviously fiction. Emmaline, the main character in my story, is a young servant, toiling daily on the fields of her lord, under the supervision of the peasant in charge. She wants to change her life and become in charge of someone else.

Throughout the story, Em is mysteriously helped by a secretive someone, through letters telling her what to do. At first, Em is doubtful, but once she tries the instructions, it turns out that they work. Em becomes more and more dependant on the letters, and when they mysteriously stop, Em is scared.
However, Em has enough experience through the letters to pick herself up and do what she thinks that the letter-writer would say for her to do.
Eventually, Em succeeds, of course, but she never gets to meet her mysterious helper. (At least not in Book One, Spoiler, Spoiler.)
