Mondelwyn'S Encyclopedia Of Enchantments
Mondelwyn's Encyclopedia of Enchantments was written by Mercurian Mondelwyn, a widely travelled wizard of the seventeenth century. His ambition was to publish a tome containing all spells and enchantments that were practiced wizards of various parts of the world, hence this precious volume. Lost to obscurity, his Encyclopedia has recently resurfaced due to renewed academic interest in the early 1900s, and has proved remarkably insightful on the diversity of charms and curses of the magical world. This book is for both the novice and the master, for the curious and the learned. It describes common charms as wells as complex curses, offering information and inspiration alike. (Author's note: this is an exercise in indulgent spell-making, and thus will contain many non-canonic incantations and spells, and take several liberties with the spells taught in HiH. Nevertheless, I hope this work is appreciated as an exercise in imagination and inspiration. Your support is welcome (through messages etc.)! Simple Dispelling Enchantments
For a piece of magic to be countered, sometimes only a simple counterspell is required, such as the general Finite. Despite its simplicity and restricted applicability, it is immensely useful and important to know these spells of termination, in the event of you finding spells going out of control or causing harm.
0.1 General Counterspells
Incantation: Finite
Difficulty: I and above, depending on the spell to counter
Effect: Ongoing effects of a single spell can be stopped.
Incantation: Finite Incantatem
Difficulty: II and above, depending on the spell to counter
Effect: Multiple spells in the area with ongoing effects can be stopped, instead of just one.
0.2 General Untransfiguration Spell
Incantation: Reparifarge
Difficulty: I and above, depending on the transfiguration
Effect: Incompletely transfigured objects are returned to their original state.
0.3 Dispersion Countercharm
Incantation: Dispergo
Difficulty: I and above, depending on the spell countered
Countering Complex Magic
Other times when faced with a great piece of magic, the right incantation is the least of your worries. For you to undo a sufficiently advanced piece of magic, you must understand how the magic was cast, not unlike a puzzle. It requires understanding of the focus, willpower and concentration involved in the creation of the spell. This means that the Permanent Sticking Charm can actually be undone by someone else besides the original caster, if the wizard attempting it understands the complicated process of Permanent Sticking. Epoximise Eternis for example requires understanding of the target being bound,
Recanting Complex Dark Magic
Occasionally, there have been rare reports that complex Dark magic have been undone to a certain degree (albeit not completely) when it was previously deemed impossible. An example is Albus Dumbledore's countering of Voldemort's Fiendfyre snake. Dispelling Dark magic therefore requires information and knowledge of how that Dark piece of magic is done, and using appropriate (and seemingly simple) dispelling incantations (including Finite, Deletrius, or Recanto). For example, simply chanting Finite or Flagreohex Recanto is woefully insufficient against any Fiendfyre, unless you have intimate knowledge of the cost involved in Fiendfyre, how Fiendfyre is shaped into forms, and what sustains the spell. The focus of Recanto or Finite directed at the Fiendfyre requires you to focus for example in undoing the complicated magical processes that sustain the Fiendfyre using the Wizard's own blood as cost.
