Mondelwyn'S Encyclopedia Of Enchantments
Mondelwyn's Encyclopedia of Enchantments was written by Mercurian Mondelwyn, a widely travelled wizard of the seventeenth century. His ambition was to publish a tome containing all spells and enchantments that were practiced wizards of various parts of the world, hence this precious volume. Lost to obscurity, his Encyclopedia has recently resurfaced due to renewed academic interest in the early 1900s, and has proved remarkably insightful on the diversity of charms and curses of the magical world. This book is for both the novice and the master, for the curious and the learned. It describes common charms as wells as complex curses, offering information and inspiration alike. (Author's note: this is an exercise in indulgent spell-making, and thus will contain many non-canonic incantations and spells, and take several liberties with the spells taught in HiH. Nevertheless, I hope this work is appreciated as an exercise in imagination and inspiration. Your support is welcome (through messages etc.)! Introduction To The Encyclopaedia
Chapter 1
Mondelwyn's Encyclopedia of Enchantments was written by Mercurian Mondelwyn, a Muggle-born wizard of the seventeenth century who travelled the magical worlds of Europe, Asia, Africa and even the Americas. His ambition was to publish a tome containing all spells and enchantments that were practiced wizards of various parts of the world, hence this precious volume. The Encyclopedia was first published during the height of the Scientific Revolution, but was squashed into obscurity due to his Muggle-born status. Nevertheless, his Encyclopedia has resurfaced due to renewed academic interest in the early 1900s, and has proved remarkably insightful on the diversity of charms and curses of the magical world.
This book is for both the novice and the master, for the curious and the learned. It describes common charms as wells as complex curses, offering information and inspiration alike. Mondelwyn's Encyclopedia can be thought to consist of four major sections - the Elementary, the Altering, the Practical and the Disciplinary. The Elementary organises what Mondelwyn terms as Elementary enchantments - spells that concern the basic energy forms of heat, light, motion, sound et cetera. The Altering records spells that involve changing properties of objects, or transfigurative spells. The Practical constitutes of spells of more complicated nature, and are categorised into thematic groups of function, including the combative and the secretive. The Disciplinary documents spells that have more specialised uses in specific magical fields, and describes spells peculiar to fields such as Herbology, Potioneering and Transfiguration. The Beyond is a special component of the Disciplinary, which encompasses what were then understood as the Study of Mysteries. Such Mysterious research is still being carried out in high secrecy in the Department of Mysteries, though Mondelwyn's rigorous research yielded some invaluable information about such studies of his time.
