Chapter 43

Professor Nivalis Swoopstikes was a former potions master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a position he held for fifty years before turning it over to Horace Slughorn. Growing up in the town of Tutshill, England, Swoopstikes’s family was avid fans of their hometown’s Quidditch team, the Tutshill Tornados. When Swoopstikes attended Hogwarts as a student, he was a Keeper for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team for a year before realizing that he preferred to watch from the stands. However, this realization did not diminish his love for Quidditch nor his hometown Quidditch team, which was evident later in his life when he decorated his office with official Tutshill Tornados merchandise and was known to attend every Hogwarts Quidditch game.

Along with being an expert in potions, Swoopstikes was an avid entomologist. He found both magical and mundane insects intriguing in their biology. He kept a private insect collection in his office where he would care for them regularly. Whenever a specimen had died, he would harvest the appropriate parts and use them as potion ingredients, often insisting that caring for the insects produced better quality ingredients. The portrait of Swoopstikes is located in Tracery Hall on the ground floor, where he can be seen holding a magnifying glass in one hand and a Billywig in the other.
