Personality Typing: Mbti
Chapter 5
One of my personal interests is Muggle personality typing! The MBTI
(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is my favorite, and it's useful for learning more
about oneself. Since that's a necessary part of discovering an animagus form,
there's no downside to trying it out.
MBTI typing has two forms: the dichotomy-based version, or less-common but more-complex cognitive functions theory.
The former is based on dichotomies – either/or questions. It
asks whether your personality is:
Extroverted or Introverted
And Sensing or Intuiting
And Thinking or Feeling
And Judging or Perceiving
Extroverted (E)
people get their energy from the outside world, by interacting with people or
situations around them. Introverted (I)
people prefer the inner world in their mind, and "recharge their
batteries" by being alone.
Sensing (S)
people are more focused on concrete details, the realistic and the practical. Intuiting (I) people are more concerned
with patterns and the abstract. These are the methods of perceiving the world.
Thinking (T)
people more often make decisions based on logic, while Feeling (F) people more often are concerned with the emotional
impacts of these choices (in themselves or others). These are the methods of
making judgments.
Judging (J)
people aren't actually judgmental, but they are decisive! They like to
organize, decide, and influence situations around them; they use the judging
functions (T or F) more than perceiving. Perceiving
(P) people are more likely to be open to changes, and use S or N more than
their judging functions.
Everyone uses all
of these sometimes, but everyone favors one over the other in each category!
Which do you use more often?
I'm INTP, which
is Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving. I need alone time to gain
energy; I'm very much a head-in-the-clouds, abstractions-and-ideas type; I rely
on logic more than the emotional connotations; I am not a decisive person, but
prefer to take in information.
There are tests all over the internet, along with labels and
summaries for the 16 types:
ISTJ – the
examiner
ISFJ – the
defender
INFJ – the mystic
INTJ – the
strategist
ISTP – the
craftsman
ISFP – the artist
INFP – the
dreamer
INTP – the
architect
ESTP – the
promoter
ESFP – the
performer
ENFP – the
champion
ENTP – the
innovator
ESTJ – the
overseer
ESFJ – the
provider
ENFJ – the
teacher
ENTJ – the leader
Perhaps later I'll try to compile the usual commentary on
each type (it varies from source to source, so don't put too much stock in the
details). For now, look yours up!
