Twenty-three year old Lance isn't what one would call a wizard; in fact, he's rather ordinary, even though his card tricks are quite stunning. However, when a tape is dropped off at his door showing the real reason behind his mother's mysterious death (originally, the verdict had been a gas explosion), he becomes obsessed with the idea of real magic. When hopping on the train to Hogwarts, Lance is a stranger among the young wizards and witches, and when arriving at the school is determined to show Albus Dumbledore the truth behind the death of Peter Pettigrew.
