Chapter 1: The Basics Of Wandlore

Chapter 1

Wandlore is the ancient and complex study of the history, abilities, and actions of a branch of magic shrouded in mystery. Wands are quasi-sentient tools used by witches and wizards to cast spells. Those who study this unusual branch of magic are known as wandmakers. Two of England's most famous wandmakers are Garrick Ollivander and Mykew Gregorovitch.

Today's wands are a product of history and have been experimented on and changed for centuries. The practice of wandmaking is different around the world on a macro scale and different from maker to maker on a micro scale.

To become a wandmaker an individual having a magical education must have an apprenticeship under a skilled wandmaker to learn the practice. Though there is much that is unknown about the practice of wandlore it is clear that in order for one to properly construct a wand that's worth a galleon the maker must have a clear and, at the most, rudimentary understanding of wandlore basics. Although, even the great Garrick Ollivander confessed that the best wizards do not understand the immense depths of wands and their surrounding knowledge. The most known fact about wandlore is that, "the wand chooses the wizard..., though it is not always clear as to why."

There are three components crucial to wandcraft and a fourth intangible quality that comes from the three materials. The core influences the 'personality' of a wand sufficiently, as one will often be told when purchasing a wand at Ollivanders that no two are ever alike, just as no two dragons, unicorns, or pheonixes are alike. This is what makes wands so individualistic and unique.
