Chapter 1

More than just the fact that I'm a witch, it's that I ended up in Gryffindor. Shouldn't the braver ones be there? Clever? Those who first act, then think and save others? The sorting hat is said to be indestructible. That he always sees the truth. As I walked along the many treacherous stairs with the other freshmen, I began to doubt whether this was just a mistake. For God's sake, me and brave? I'm an absolute freak! I'm not a hero! I... don't belong in Gryffindor.

"But yes, we all belong here," remarked the girl next to me, as if she knew what I meant.

"I know that too. I mean… sorry for reading your mind and stuff… but I'm not in control yet. Not completely. Sorry," she explained and I had to smile. If I can be a Gryffindor, then nothing really surprises me anymore - not even a mind-reading girl.

"I'm Jane," I said after a moment.

"Tess, I'm glad," she replied, smiling. She had shoulder-length black hair, a cheeky twinkle in her blue eyes, and a sarcastic smile on her lips. I think she is perfect for this house.

I ended up in the room together with Tess and two foreign girls. One of them, a blonde, immediately ran downstairs saying she was going to tell her older brother that she too was in Gryffindor. I tried to smile, but I couldn't. Classes are supposed to start tomorrow! How does he even study at Hogwarts? It sure must be fun.

“Are you from a wizarding family?” Tess asked to get the conversation going.

"Don't even tell me," the girl began, and she fixed her unruly red hair, "I have eight brothers, fifteen cousins, eleven cousins... and all of them wizards and witches!"

"Ugh. I don't even want to imagine family celebrations," I remarked, and we all laughed.

"I'm Becca. My full name is Rebecca, but if you call me that, I'll knock you off the Astronomy Tower," she threatened, and by the look on her face I knew she meant it. I'm no hero, but at least I have some friends now.

It was here. Quidditch training. I don't even know why, but I went to every single one. I sat on the tribune and watched our team. They flew up and down, and in five minutes the Golden Snitch was caught. I don't know why I went to watch broomstick fliers, but I enjoyed it. To observe how they are one played team. I was the best in flying lessons, which surprised me.

"Don't you want to keep flying around the field?" a girl, triathlete, team leader suddenly asked me.

"Is that possible?" I asked, trying not to sound off. Of course, I wanted to!

"I think so," she replied, winking at me. And then I felt a little flame in my chest. A flame of disobedience. Insolence. The desire to edit something crazy, laugh at it, and keep it again. In other words: I guess I have much more Gryffindor blood than I had hoped for.

I got on the broom and I understood that Quidditch is genius.
