Chapter 4
I woke up the next morning to someone softly knocking on the door. It was Thresh. He grumbled, "You missed dinner and the replays of the reapings last night. You didn't hear when Lilia knocked on your bathroom door when you were taking a bath, so today at breakfast we're going to watch it again for you." I nodded, noticing his deep brown eyes boring into mine.
When I finally found where breakfast was, Thresh was already there, staring out the window. I tried to make eye contact with him as I sat down, but he refused to, and seemed intent upon his breakfast.
Immediately after I was seated, a huge platter was set down in front of me, containing eggs, fried potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. I was really hungry from not having any dinner from the night before, but I was used to that, used to often going to bed starved while all of my food portion was in my younger siblings' stomachs. I couldn't help but immediately stuff myself with all of the food I could get my hands on.
After I had finished, which didn't take very long compared to the tons of food on my plate, Lilia turned on the T.V. to the reapings. It started with District one. I identified the girl that got called up as very pretty with her curly blonde hair and pure green eyes. The boy was handsome with his dark hair and light skin, but I couldn't shake off the terrifying look in his eyes.
In District Two, a big tank of a boy lunged forward, literally tripping over himself to go up to the stage, who volunteered. Someone who looked like she could be his sister was called up, too. In District Three, there was a boy I could tell was really smart called up and a girl who looked fierce but not very powerful. In district Four, there was a boy with dreadlocks and a girl that looked average, but still smart. In District Five, there was a girl who looked like a fox and a boy that looked pretty mysterious.
In District Six, there was a smiling, dark-skinned boy and a shadowy, pretty girl reaped. In District Seven, a absolutely terrified boy and a nervous, clumsy girl reaped. In Nine, a dark-skinned boy and a light-skinned redhead girl reaped. In Ten was a boy with a crippled leg and a girl that was very plump. And then there was me, scared and looking very vulnerable. Then Thresh being called up, and the commentators pointing out him, saying how much he seems to be like a winner of the games to them and stuff like that.
Then I saw a girl who looked about my age being called up in District Twelve and an older girl who sort-of resembled her volunteered. I saw a boy named Peeta being called up and saw him blush as he shook hands with the girl.
