Chapter 30
Suddenly there was a huge explosion and I saw smoke fill the sky up ahead as I turned over. "Huh-" I saw that Clove, who was running towards me with a knife drawn, stopped, confused. I rolled over into the bushes right exactly when Marvel, Cato, and the boy from 3 crashed out of the ones opposite me. Clove yelled over the noise, "Cato! What happened? Who did that? What's going on?!" Marvel and the boy from Three looked extremely frightened, yet Cato looked calm.
No, not calm, but dangerous. "We're going back to the lake. Now!" Clove looked at the spot where I had been and said, "But-" Cato interrupted her. "DO YOU THINK WE HAVE TIME FOR THIS?! JUST GO TO THE LAKE!" He made everyone jump, including me, and after that luckily they all left pretty quickly, but Clove still seemed hesitant.
I was extremely lucky with the explosion's timing, but I wondered if it was Katniss or not. I got to my feet and looked around for a place to sleep nearby. I saw it, high up in a tree. I sighed, brushed myself off, and started climbing. It took me over two hours to get there because I just wasn't into it.
Once I got there, I sat there, exhausted, until the sky fell dark and the anthem played. I watched the sky, hoping Katniss wasn't killed, hoping she was alright and didn't die in the explosions. I saw the boy from ten, who must have been the one killed this morning. I thought that it was him.
Then the boy from three. I remembered hearing his cannon, or what I thought was his cannon, on my way up the tree. Then the sky went dark. I listened to the animal sounds for a while, then remembered I had a sleeping bag. I took it out of my pack, ate some berries, and bolted myself to the tree.
I spent most of the night trying to fall asleep, but my ears were still ringing from the explosions and I couldn't. I kept thinking of Katniss, and worry kept me awake. It was only when the first rays of sunlight started to appear that I suddenly got really tired and nodded off.
