Chapter 24
In one split second, Katniss had a loaded bow pointed right at me. I tried to hide behind the tree, but I knew she heard me, if not saw me. I heard her say something. Good, this conversation she started would postpone my death longer. But then the words of it registered. "You know, they're not the only ones who can form alliances." I peered out of the tree, not believing the offer she had made. Just to be sure it meant what I thought it meant, I said, "You want me for an ally?" A small pause.
She shrugged. "Why not?" I couldn't believe it. She continued. "You saved me with those tracker jackers. You're smart enough to still be alive. And I can't seem to shake you anyway." I blinked at her. I was alive, but it was hard not to. I wasn't in this big thing where someone knew I was there and was planning my death before a couple minutes ago. And it would be wrong to not tell her about the beehive. I wanted the Careers wounded as much as possible without doing it myself. I didn't want them to be killed. Well, I didn't want anybody to be killed.
I guessed the part about me following her was true. She looked at me impatiently, further convincing me by saying, "You hungry?" In reply, I swallowed and looked at the delicious meat for a split second. She noticed. "Come on then, I've had two kills today." It took a moment to register that the kills were animals, not people.
I stepped forwards hesitantly, deciding that if we were allies, I should tell her. "I know how to fix your stings." Her eyes widen a tiny bit and I suddenly noticed a mockingjay wing flying away, like the one on her pin. "You can? How?" I dug around in the pack, looking for the leaves I had collected, just in case I was sung. When I pulled them out, she asked me where I found them.
I wasn't certain how to answer that question because I had gotten them from quite a few bushes, so I shrugged. "Just around. Everyone carries them when they work in the orchards. They left tons of nests there. There are a ton here, too."
Katniss had a dreamy look in her eyes as she said, "That's right! You're District Eleven, Agriculture. Orchards, huh? That must be how you can fly around the trees like you've got wings." She glanced at me in wonder and I smiled. I guess what she said was right. When I thought about it, my heart ached. Katniss looked back at the leaves. "Well, fix me up!"
I remembered her stings and I stuffed the leaves in my mouth as she plopped down by the dying fire and pulled up her pants leg. Soon I took them out and place it on her knee. She sighed in relief. "Ohh..." I giggled and said, "Be glad you pulled the stingers out or you'd feel a lot worse." She begged me to apply them on her other stings, and I place them carefully on her neck and cheek.
When it's over, she saw the long burn on my arm and said, "I've got something for that." She spread something on my burn and it felt a lot better. I sighed. "Your sponsors are great." Katniss frowned. "Have you gotten anything yet?" I shake my head. I completely forgot about sponsors before now. "You will, though. Watch. The closer we get to the end, the more people will realize how clever you are." She encouraged me.
I smiled shyly. A nagging thought popped into my mind suddenly, and I decided to bring up its topic. "You weren't joking about being allies?" She said, "No, I meant it." I thought about why I'd want to be her ally. She's smart, for sure. She's caring and her token is a symbol of rebellion, the mockingjay, back in District Eleven. I shake hands with her. "Okay, it's a deal."
