Chapter 23
First I saw that there was a
knife, which I had no idea how to use. I
reminded myself to bury it under a pile of leaves when I finished. There was some peppermints, which I greedily popped in
my mouth before I could help myself. Sugar was usually a rarity back home,
and I didn't want to lose anything as precious as that. There was some more food, but it was just
some roots that I noticed was common in this place nearby here.
I found a couple of spearheads, but they were useless without a spear, and there were also some more berries and nuts I can add to my collection. That was all. I had already gotten so many things, I felt like how it must feel when you're starving and get to eat a huge feast. I stumbled out of the tree and found a good pile of leaves. I buried the spearheads and knife deep under it, so no one will find it.
Then I walked around until I found the Career camp by the lake. I stayed nearby for the next couple of days, spying on them and finding a good hiding spot where I could spy on them invisibly. The Careers were really struggling with the tracker jacker stings and all. Peeta was mysteriously gone with Glimmer and the girl from District 4, but his face never appeared in the sky like the other two did on the first night after the tracker jackers.
On my third afternoon, I was bored and wandering the woods when I smelled something delicious. There was smoke in the sky. I tried to go the other way, but meat was rare at home, and I hadn't gotten any at all in the arena, so I found myself heading towards it. Besides, I was curious. Who was it?
When I get there, I found Katniss, looking really weak and hungry, sitting in the middle of a clearing, cooking what I recognized as a goosling. I licked my lips. Delicious. She skinned it and started to cover the coals in dirt. I couldn't help it. The smell of cooked meat was overpowering and I was starved. I took a step forward and a twig snapped. I had caught Katniss's attention, and I was as good as dead now.
