Chapter 20
Peeta said loudly, "Oh, let her stay up there. It's not like she's going anywhere. We'll deal with her in the morning." I looked up at the sky and realized it was already getting dark. I watched as Katniss put on her jacket and lay out her sleeping bag. She had a sleeping bag! I thought of all of the cold nights I slept through with nothing but a pair of socks to warm my hands, while she was all warm and snug in that sleeping bag!
I heard her moan a little and saw her cut a slash in the bag and let her kneecap out in the open air. I saw a big, gaping burn on it and I have to look away. Ouch. That must have hurt. I remembered my burn on my arm and I looked at it. It was long, but not as deep as hers. It still hurt a lot.
As Katniss settled down, I heard a familiar and faint buzzing noise. I looked all around, hoping tracker jackers weren't by me. Then I spotted them. They were a couple of branches above Katniss, and I squinted at it. Was that- yes, it was a whole nest of them! I decided it only seemed fair to warn Katniss, and so as it got darker and darker, I stared at her intently, hoping she'd notice me.
She finally looked around and spotted me, but must have assumed my eyes belonged to a possum or something. She relaxed and snuggled in her sleeping bag again. Then she sat up, staring at me, recognition in her eyes. I blinked once, then carefully slid my hand into view, making sure not to even rustle a leaf, and pointed to the nest of the dangerous bees.
Her eyes follow my hand and widen as she spotted the nest. I slowly melted back into my tree so that she won't be able to find me. And if she can't see me, she can't kill me even if she wanted to. Then I leaned back against a branch, put my socks over my hands, belt myself in, and fell into a light sleep.
