Chapter 12

On the fourth day of training, the Gamekeepers arrived.  I tried to ignore them because they made me nervous.  I noticed how they always have a banquet nearby at the training center.  The next day, I couldn't bear them watching what I'm doing, so I watched Peeta and Katniss, who were throwing spears.  Eventually they noticed me, but I pretend I didn't notice.  After a while, they left and I decided to not seem too into what they were doing and so I decided to join them in different stations.

I tried not too look that bad at everything, so I joined them in what I did best.  I did the plant identification with them, the rock climbing with them, and tried to impress them with the slingshots.  Peeta just looked at me with sympathy when he saw that my weapon was only a slingshot, and I knew he was right.  No one in their right mind would think a puny slingshot would stand a chance against someone like Cato.

The only thing they were impressed with was my climbing.  Of course, they thought I could barely even walk with my crippled leg, but I had learned and was soon the best climber around at District Twelve.  Rue and I always climbed faster and higher than anyone else.

The next day was the private sessions with the Gamemakers.  I was the third to last person, and when I came in and started to slingshot, they started to mess around and drink wine.  Only a couple people were looking my way.  I started to climb and swing around, but it felt like no one was looking.  I did the best I possibly could, ignoring the anger brewing inside me, and finally they excused me.

When I reached my level, everyone called me to the sitting room.  I sat by Seeder, who asked me what I did.  I stuck to the basics, and Seeder beamed when I finished.  "I'd give you an eleven for that!"  Thresh stayed silent.  We all chatted (except for Thresh) until dinner, yet everyone ate in silence, anticipating the scores.  We all finished in almost no time at all, and we go back into the sitting room to see the scores.

District 1, 2, and 4 got tens and nines, while most everyone else got a five or six.  Thresh got a ten, which made sense, but I got- a seven!  I nearly passed out.  Everyone was complimenting me, and I beamed for the first time in a while.  My mouth hurt a lot.  I congratulate Thresh, and he congratulates me back.  He looked happy on the outside, but his eyes were shallow and depressed.

He left early, and I left soon after to look for him because I just felt like it.  He looked away when I sat down by him.  "What are you doing?"  He asked, almost accusingly.  I shrugged.  "I was looking for you."

"Well, don't in the future."

"Okay, but there's no harm in seeing if-"

"I don't care, okay?  Just leave me alone!"  Thresh stood up and left.  I sat there in shock, until I finally remembered that he wasn't a people person.  After that, I left him alone.
