Chapter 5

Chance have never liked Luna, it’s not that she’s not nice, but Chance just didn’t know her. He didn’t want to hurt Luna’s feelings, but Brooklyn was the one he wanted.

Hi, Luna Chance texted “Luna” on Instagram.

Hey Chance, what’s up

Hey, umm, I was wondering, are you Brooklyn’s sister?

After a couple of minutes, Luna didn’t reply to him.

Actually, I am her, but please please please don’t tell anyone that we’ve been talking on Instagram, especially not my sister, plzzz

Alright then, I won’t, but why didn’t you talk to me irl

Oh, I was shy, and shocked, I didn’t quite believe my eyes, and I didn’t know what to say to not make things awkward between us

Actually, me too, I’ve suspected that you were you for several days but it’s a bit weird, so I didn’t say anything

I really want to get to know u and be friends with u irl

Maybe we can find a time to talk or hang out

Yay! But I think that my sister will think that it’s weird

Yeah, but she’ll find out some day anyways

Knowing Luna has been a heavy burden on Chance’s heart, knowing that there’s someone out there who admires and loves him give him pressure. He wanted to stay away from Luna and pretend that they have never spoken on Instagram, but she would be disappointed, perhaps even heart-broken.

Chance couldn’t imagine being in a relationship with Luna, he would never like her romantically. Perhaps Brooklyn had the same feeling for Chance, for she had referred to him as a “friend.”

A few days later, while talking beside the lockers with Hunter, Brooklyn and Chloe caught up with Chance.

“You guys know the physics project, on projectile motion?” Brooklyn asked them, “We were wondering if you two would like to be in a group with us.”

“Well, Professor Draekon said that it should be three to four people per group, so sure,” Hunter replied, “But we haven’t really though about it yet.”

“That’s completely fine, so it’s settled then, the four of us?” Brooklyn asked.

Chance said, “Yep, I’m in.”

“The project’s due next Friday, right?” Chloe asked.

“I think so, let me check,” Hunter pulled out his phone, “It’s the 13th, so yep, it’s next Friday.”

“We’ll have to meet together to work on it,” Chloe suggested, “Perhaps this Friday or Saturday?”

“Friday after school would be nice,” Hunter said.

“Sure, we can talk about this later, right now,” Brooklyn reached inside her locker, “I think we should be going to Literature class.”

The two girls took out their books and left for class.

“Hey Chance, the literature classroom changed, right?” Hunter asked him.

“It’s 203 today, some senior kids are taking exams.”

“Oh, yes, I remember, thanks.”

So it was set that the four meet at Brooklyn’s house on Friday, right after school.

That Friday, they walked to Brooklyn’s house together since it only took 15 minutes on foot.

“The instructions were to derive and prove the equations Professor Draekon had given us, right?” Hunter asked on the way.

Chloe spun around quickly, “Yeah, through experiments.”

After several minutes of walking, they soon arrived at Brooklyn’s apartment. Brooklyn’s apartment was small but tall, it had about 14 or 15 floors, and Brooklyn’s house was on the seventh floor.

They took the elevator to the seventh floor, it was a bit crammed for the four teens and their enormous backpacks to fir in the elevator, but they have managed to squeeze themselves in.

Brooklyn opened the door with her fingerprint and asked the others to leave their shoes at the front door.

“I have some slippers if you feel cold,” Brooklyn entered her house and grabbed three slippers. She laid them on the floor.

The other three students slipped their feet into the slippers and Chance closed the front door.

“Wow, there’s really a lot of stuff in your house!” Chloe gasped as her eyes darted around the counter pieces.

On every shelf, table, and some chairs, there were knickknacks all over. On the refrigerator doors and the inside of the front door, there were tons of magnets of all shapes and sizes.

“Oh, hi, you guys must be here to work on the physics project! Brooklyn has told me about it,” Brooklyn’s mother came out of her room and greeted the teens, she was short and plump, but had a young face, her auburn hair was tied into a neat bun above her head, “Make yourself at home, I could prepare some hot chocolate if you want.”

“Sure, thank you so much, Mrs. Stowell,” Chloe answered.

Brooklyn later explained that most of the knickknacks in her house were collected from vacations she had went on all over the world, from France and Holland all the way to Japan and China.

“All right then, so let’s get started on the project,” Brooklyn said once the others have looked around her house briefly.

Hunter suggested, “I guess we should use a small ball, like a clay ball or something because it won’t make a lot of damage.”

“Yep,” Chloe agreed, “And it would be really convenient for us to alter the size.”

“And we also need a place to launch the ball from, I think the dinner table would be a decent choice, since nothing’s in the way if we roll it down,” Hunter said.

“So first, the clay ball, I’ll go get some clay,” Brooklyn went off.

In a blink of an eye, she had returned with a box of blue clay.

“Wait a second, the velocity and distance shouldn’t be affected by its weight, right?” Chance pointed out, “So we don’t really have to change the size.”

Chloe replied, “Yeah, I also thought about it, but I think it’ll be better if we change its size to prove that it doesn’t affect the formulas, and it might be able to show some of our uncertainties.”

“I think four balls would be enough, each one needs three trials, so it’s twelve trials, that’s already a lot,” Brooklyn said as she started rolling the clay into a ball shape, “You guys can make these balls, I’ll go grab the materials we need, you know, the meter rule, stopwatch, and, wait, what else do we need?”

“I think that’s it, oh, maybe that kind of really thick tape? You know, the kind that you use to mark stuff, we can use it to mark the place that the ball landed on,” Chance said.

“Sure, good idea, I’ll go get them,” Brooklyn left off again.

Chloe asked, more of mockery than actually looking for an answer, “So, we just pushed the ball off the table and record the time and distance?”

“I know, it’s really silly, and there’s gonna be a ton of inaccuracies, but that’s the assignment,” Hunter shrugged.

“I think we’re done with the clay balls,” Chance looked down at the floor, where there were four blue clay balls, from small to large.

“Let’s go out and do the actual experiment then,” Hunter stood up and the other two followed along.

Brooklyn was standing beside the dining table, with a roll of red tape in one hand and a meter rule in the other, there was a stopwatch laid on the table, “So, I think I’ve got everything all set, we can just roll the ball from this point,” she pointed at the side of the table, “and see where and when it lands.”

Just as they were discussing about the project, the front door of Brooklyn’s house opened and Luna entered.

Chance waved slightly at her, “Hi, Luna,” he said.

“Hey,” Luna grinned a bit, “So are you guys just hanging out over here today?”

Brooklyn explained, “Oh, we’re working on a physics project right now.”

“Cool, so I guess I’ll just stay in my room,” Luna left and went into her room.

After almost 2 hours, the four have collected the data of the time and distance for the ball to land on the floor from rolling down the edge of the table. They have started on their power point for the presentation and have planned to finish it up over the weekend.

“I mean, it’s really impossible to measure these values accurately,” Hunter said, examining the time vs horizontal distance graph, which was slanted and crooked, it was hard to find the line of best fit even though the graph was supposed to be a straight line.

“Well I guess the other groups had the same problem too, so it’s quite all right,” Brooklyn sighed.

Chance checked the time on his phone, it was about 6:30 at night, “I’d better be going home for dinner right now, my mom really values the family time during dinner, so I’ve gotta go.”

“Me too,” said Hunter.

“Sure then, bye guys,” Brooklyn waved at the boys, “Chloe, do you wanna stay here for dinner?”

Chloe smiled, “Of course, why not?”

Chance and Hunter left Brooklyn’s house and closed the door behind them.

“How are you going home then?” Chance asked Hunter on the elevator.

“I guess I can call a taxi, my house is pretty far from here, what about you?”

“Oh, I can just walk, my house is really close by.”

Hunter called a taxi and was waiting for it to arrive and pick him up, Chance continued on his way home and waved good-bye to him.

“See you on Monday,” Hunter waved back.

Over the weekend, the girls have completed the power point, stating the process, data, and conclusions for the experiment since they didn’t trust the boys on the work.

“Eh, Chance,” Brooklyn saw Chance on Monday when he was entering the front gate of the school.

“Hi, Brooklyn.”

“You don’t have Luna’s number, do you?” she asked.

“Nope, why?”

Brooklyn shrugged, “Oh, she told me the other day that she really wants your number.”

“Brooklyn, I want to tell you something,” Chance’s footsteps came to a halt.

Brooklyn smiled slightly, “What is it?”

“Please don’t tell Luna, but I really don’t like your sister, no matter how much she likes me, and I know you want to help her, but no.”

“Oh, umm, I understand you, well, fine then.”

During class, Chance found it a bit hard to concentrate on the professor’s words or the knowledge, since his mind was occupied with troubling thoughts on how to deal with Luna and his fondness for Brooklyn.

Chance went into Instagram, hoping to relax a while by watching some reels, but the only thing he saw after opening the app was several DMs from Luna, asking how his day was and what he was doing at the moment.

Yeah, I’m just at school, having my typical day

Me too, school is soo boring, I hate economics

Yeah, but I’m having class rn so I can’t rly talk

Oh, ok then talk to u later :D

Part of Chance wanted to stop replying to Luna’s DMs and pretend that nothing has ever happened between them, but his conscience stopped him.
