Chapter 4

The next Monday, Chance arrived at school as usual, but feeling much more confident after having hanged out with Brooklyn the other day. Even though it was nothing close to a date, it felt nice to have Brooklyn around.

“Hi Chance,” Brooklyn waved at him when she saw him in the morning.

There was no one else around, and Chance felt like it was his opportunity to ask Brooklyn, “Eh, Brooklyn, I have something I want to talk to you about.”

Brooklyn leaned against the wall and said, “Yeah, sure.”

“I was wondering, are you pretending not to recognize me or what?”

Brooklyn looked confused, “Excuse me? I think that I do recognize you, and I act like it too.”

“Oh, I mean, you know, on Instagram.” Chance could feel his cheeks burning so hot.

“I don’t think I have you on Instagram, and I don’t really use it very often, are you sure you’re talking to the right person? Maybe it’s someone else you’re thinking about?”

Chance wanted to end this conversation so badly he said, “Yeah, right, I’m sorry, never mind.” Then, he turned away and entered the classroom.

The day went on awkwardly, Chance avoided talking to Brooklyn or even being in her presence. However, Brooklyn simply let the issue go away and didn’t bring it up or feel uneasy about it.

Later in the afternoon, when he was at home, Chance was chatting with Luna again, indeed, she didn’t mention anything about school that Chance could relate to. She had told her own story about what had happened at school, the classes, the activities, her friends, and all that. They seemed very different than what occurs in Eastwood High.

You know, Luna, something really weird has been going on at my school

Tell me about it :D

There was a new girl in our class, and she looked so similar to you, if her name wasn’t Brooklyn, I would actually believe that it’s you!

Wow, really? That sounds pretty cool, do you have a photo of her or something?

Yep, wait a sec

Chance cropped Brooklyn’s face out of the photos they had taken together at the Escape Quest and sent them over to Luna.

Wowww! I think we do look really similar, except for the eyes though, I think her eyes are a bit longer than mine, and her eyebrows are darker, But wow

Yep, I was so shocked when she walked into the classroom on the first day, I actually thought that it was you LOL

To be honest, it’s a bit scary to know that somewhere out there there’s someone who is so similar to me

There’s a lot of things u don’t know about this world

There seemed to be no reasonable explanation for the situation of Brooklyn and Luna if neither was lying. One, or both of them must be lying. After analyzing over and over, Chance concluded that it was either that Brooklyn and Luna were the same person and they thought that Chance was funny, or that Luna used Brooklyn’s photos and said that it was actually her.

Time flies by so quickly, it was already the middle of October, more than a month have passed since Chance had first met Brooklyn. Halloween was the next week and Chance have received an email from Eastwood’s official email on the activities that are holding at Eastwood High.

There are going to be games including pumpkin bowling, telling ghost stories, costume contest, bobbing for apples, and many more.

There was still a week before Halloween, and Chance have already been busy browsing online, choosing the best outfit to wear. Halloween was an opportunity for him to glow up himself and look his spookiest and coolest. After seeing so many photos on Pinterest, Chance had finally decided to dress up as the Grim Reaper.

“Mom, you know, Halloween’s in a week.”

Chance’s mother said, “Yeah I know, do you still want to wear last year’s vampire or do you want something new.”

“Oh, here,” Chance brought his phone to his mother and showed her the outfit he had seen on Pinterest, “I really like this costume, it’s Death himself.”

“I can buy it for you, but do you have the link.”

Chance scanned the description under the pin and found the link, he sent it to his mother, “All right, I sent it to you.”

“OK, I’ll buy it later,” she walked into Daisy’s room, “Daisy, do you have an idea of your costume for Halloween yet?”

Emm, not really,” Daisy shouted out from her room.

“Oh, I’ve found some for you, I can show you and you can pick which one you like.”

Chance’s mother went in Daisy’s room and showed her some photos.

“I think I really like this one,” Daisy pointed at a photo of a Gothic fairy costume.

A few ordinary school days passed by, but everyone was waiting hastily for Halloween. On October 31st, Chance had woke up before the alarm clock rang. Drowsily, he got out of bed and headed into the dining room for breakfast.

“It’s Halloween!” Daisy jumped in front of Chance right after she came out of her room.

After finishing breakfast in their pajamas, the siblings returned to their bedrooms and changed into the costumes that have arrived just the day before.

Chance’s costume involved a robe, a mask, and a reap. Chance had some problems finding which string should be tied to which on his robe, but he soon figured out and strapped two elegant bows, one on the inside and one on the outside. The mask was a bird-faced beak shape similar to those of the plague doctors. The reap he holds was long but light, after swinging it around a bit and admiring himself in the mirror for a while, Chance stepped out of his bedroom and was ready to go to school.

Halloween was a big day, perhaps the biggest festival except for Christmas, so there were no classes. They were informed that Eastwood High and Eastwood Middle were going to have events and play games together so that it would be more entertaining and they could meet more people. This meant that there was going to be a lot of little kids around.

When he arrived at school, Chance saw vampires, werewolves, students with no heads, and loads of creepy outfits. Most of the girls have scrubbed too much eye-liner and eye shadow on their faces and reminded Chance of Wednesday. (There were several girls who dressed up as Wednesday so it was not that cool.)

Brooklyn had worn a black satin dress and painted half of her face into a skeleton while the other half was really white. But when Tristan entered the classroom, almost everyone screamed. Tristan was wearing a normal shirt, only he was holding his head in his hands, and there was a lot of blood on his neck.

“Hi guys,” he tilted his head a bit and said.

OMG Tristan!” Melody gasped, “How did you do that?”

He began to explain, “Well, it’s just a costume, and my head is actually in its normal position, it’s just that I added this upper part so that it seems like that my head is in front of my chest.”

“Oh, that’s why you seem so tall,” Melody giggled.

Melody have dressed up as a witch, wearing a black dress with some parts ripped out. After a few seconds, she looked away from Tristan and continued applying dark eyeliner and fake gashes on her face.

“Hi Chance,” Tristan’s head greeted him as he walked past, “I supposed you’re the Grim Reaper today.”

“Yep, that’s right.”

“That’s pretty cool, I really like your reap,” Tristan’s head said as he admired Chance’s fake reap.

Chance said, “Thanks, but not as cool as your costume of course.”

They both laughed.

After admiring each other’s costumes and talking about them, Halloween have finally officially started.

Chance, Hunter, and William chattered as they filed out of the classroom with the others. It took a long time to move through the crowd of students and teachers.

“I can’t wait to go pumpkin bowling,” William said in the hallways.

“Sure, I think that’s on the second floor, let’s go,” Tristan said.

The three headed downstairs and looked around. They wandered around the floor a bit and saw the sign saying “Pumpkin Bowling” and they entered the room.

The boys had some fun competing with each other and trying over and over to strike the pins down in one go. William was the best, he always have been the best at bowling. They continued going around the classrooms and outside on the sports area to participate in all sorts of activities.

While wandering on the soccer field, they saw Brooklyn and Chloe sitting on the grass at the edge of the field, gossiping and taking selfies of themselves. Luna was sitting beside Brooklyn, laughing with the other two.

Hunter waved at them and Chloe and Brooklyn both waved back.

“Hey, can we take a photo with you guys?” Brooklyn asked.

“Yeah sure,” Hunter and William took a place next to Chloe while Chance stood between Luna and Brooklyn.

The boys bent down their knees and Chloe held out her phone. The three girls smiled pleasantly, but the boys were a bit awkward.

After what seemed like ages of posing and smiling, Chloe had finally announced that she was satisfied with the photos.

She said, “Besides, do you guys know that Tristan won the costume contest?”

Hunter replied, “Uh, nope, he didn’t tell us, but his costume really deserved it.”

“Yeah, I’ll be surprised if he didn’t win,” Brooklyn said.

William said, “You know, actually every year’s Halloween is kind of the same, so after being through so many Halloweens, it gets a bit dull so no one really puts a lot of effort in their costumes.”

“I never really got the point of holidays either, it’s pretty fun when I was younger, because we don’t need to have class,” said Chance.

“Oh, and is this your sister?” William asked Brooklyn.

“Yep, she’s called Luna, she goes to Eastwood middle, so since we are combined for today, she wanted to hang out with me, so yeah.”

Luna smiled shyly at Hunter.

After chatting for a few minutes with the girls, William stood up and started to browse on social media. Chance and Hunter noticed his boredom and decided to leave.

“Bye, girls,” Hunter waved again as they left for the other events.

“Bye,” Chloe and Brooklyn said in unison.

The day went on and Chance heard a lot of ghost stories and Halloween featured spooky jokes, and when it was time to go home, Brooklyn caught up with him.

“Chance, I really want to tell you something,” a smile appeared on her face.

“Oh, sure, what is it?”

“It’s my sister, Luna,” she paused a bit and Chance nodded to signal that she could continue, “She told me a while ago and asked me not to tell you, but, eh, she said that she kind of has a crush on you.”

Chance didn’t know what to say, but, uncontrollably, the corners of his lips curled up and he began to laugh out loud.

“I did notice that she’s super shy around me.”

“You’re right, and every time she sees you, her cheeks would be so red.”

“Yeah, but I don’t really know her well, so, emm, it’s gonna be so awkward between me and her.”

“I’m also in a super awkward situation, you know. Because my sister, well, she’ll always be my sister, and I still want to be friends with you, but I don’t think it’s possible for the two of you to be in a relationship or something,” Brooklyn laughed.

Chance and Brooklyn both broke into laughter and giggled out of control for a few minutes.

“Let’s just pretend that this never happened, ok?” Brooklyn said, “And especially don’t mention to her that I told you, or she’s gonna kill me.”

“Yeah, sure.”
