Class Notes from a Year 1 Hufflepuff

written by Camilla Santos

Hi y'all! These are my notes for all the classes in Year 1, I will be starting with Transfiguration and updating everything as I go along! The notes are mostly the main points and things that are needed to study for the assignments. I have done most of these notes to the best of my ability, so here and I hope this helps! (Some of the notes might not be great because they are probably the first lesson and I was very confused lol)

Chapter 4

Professor Mitchell

Lesson 4) Transformation Theory

-the matchstick to needle transformation will be covered next week

Transformations

-transformation: branch that alters physical state of object

-transformation is done by rearranging the molecules in the object and manipulating them

-usually see the physical change

-Year 1: focuses on general transformations (inanimate to inanimate transformations)

-inanimate to inanimate transformations are typically the easiest types of transformation

Casting Basics

Willpower

-all spells fall under two classes: static or dynamic

-static spells have an immediate effect

-dynamic spells continue the affect after casting

-all transfiguration spells fall under static

-almost all transfiguration spells require willpower

-will power: mental push/desire to make a spell that gives power to your magic

-everything has a natural will to exist

-will to exist gets stronger in bigger/more complex objects

-newton’s first law: “an object at rest tends to stay at rest until acted on by an outside force.”

-transfiguration requires overcoming the will to exist and forcing your object to become what you want it to be.

Concentration

-concentration: act of centering the mind in order to directly influence the world via magic

-when you perform transfiguration, you have to focus your mind on the object you want to create out of your original target

-concentration must be held until the transformation is complete

-complex object -> more concentration

-wand movements in transfiguration are usually, simple, precise, and small

-incantations & their pronunciations are very important during the casting of transfiguration spells.

-most transfiguration spell incantations come from latin

Variations

-many targets in class have different variations and types

-important: while we will only be practicing on one particular type of the object, the transformations may be performed on any of the types.

-ex: smoke to dagger can be performed with steam to dagger

-important: also possible for you to embellish on the resulting object with the right concentration.

-ex: whistle to watch, adding a simple design on the face of the watch
