Chapter 1

April 1st 2013

Moving? Why are we moving to a dull, cold, dreary Tennessee?  Why my mom is making me move half way through my second semester of school? I don’t understand why we would leave our nice warm Texas home where the sun is always shining, where you could also fry an egg on the sidewalk during the summer. Looks like we are here we are here meaning I have to go. Wow, this place is older than I thought it would be.

I step out of the car to see the new house, or more like the old house. It even has a barn why in hell do we need a barn? We don't have animals well other than a dog that’s as big as a small horse; speaking of which, “Chip come here!” The dog comes barreling out of the car straight at me, splashing in every puddle “Chip, stop please.” I waved my hands in front of me in an attempt to make him stop. I was too late and got tackled to the ground by the massive dog. “Ugh! Chip, why? You got me all muddy.” I pushed the dog off me and stood up examining the damage. I tried to wipe the mud off my shirt and pants, having little success. Groaning I gave up.

Suddenly  my mom yelled from the house.  “Honey, why don’t you go meet the neighbors. I bet they would love to meet you.”

“I can’t mom Chip got me all muddy. I’ll do it when I get cleaned up. Oh, and I hear the truck with our things.”

“Ok, just go when you have time but make sure it’s today or tomorrow.”

I went to explore the house. My Mom said it had 5 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms. At least it was big if not it would add to the misery. I was lost in thought on the way and ended up tripping over my own two feet. I prepared for the impact of the ground. The impact never came I then realized someone had caught me. I looked up to find the most beautiful blue-green eyes looking at me with curiosity. I steadied myself and backed away from this stranger.

I could feel the blush staining my cheeks and turned and rushed into the house. I watched him walk away wondering how this guy got such a reaction out of me, I’m usually not that jumpy but something about him made me  anxious. I hid behind the door, when I thought I had stayed hidden long enough I chose to sneak a peek to find him still standing there. I can feel the blush creep back into my cheeks where he just waved at me and smirked. Groaning I waved back knowing I was already caught no point in trying to hide it.

I turned my back on the window and went up the stairs in search of my room. “Mom which room is mine?”  I screamed, not knowing where she was.

“Third room on the left,” I heard her call from the room down the hall as I heard the moving truck pull up.

“Mom, the moving truck just pulled up.” I told her as I walked to my room.

“Ok honey I will have them bring your stuff up”

“Ok thanks Mom.”

I retreated to my room and threw my small carry-on bag on to the floor. I stared at the room I was amazed at how big it was; I even had my own bathroom. The movers started to pile stuff in so I retreated to the corner to stay out of the way. After all the boxes where there the movers left and I went in search of the box with my clothes. I went in to the bathroom to shower after I told my mom. After my shower I put on a nice purple shirt and a pair of jean capris, after debating on whether to wear makeup or not I decided to and put on just enough to look nice but not be gaudy. Next I blow dried my hair and ran a brush through it; that was about as good as it would get. I told my mom where I was headed and grabbed my phone. Then I chose to take Chip with me. I knew I was just stalling but oh well. I grabbed Chip’s leash, hooked it to his collar, checked my pockets one last time to make sure I had everything and set off.

Chip was so excited though I was nervous; walking as slow as I could with the dog pulling me every step I take. When I reached the door I was hesitant on knocking but Chip started to bark and the door swung open. There he stood the picture of perfection, dark brown hair so dark it was almost black hair which had streaks of brown so light it almost looked gold, and those blue-green eyes that were too gorgeous to put into words. I stuck my hand out to shake his and ended up almost hitting him “I’m Scarlet and this is Chip. We just moved in next door but I guess you knew that.” I laughed awkwardly and I could feel the blush stain my cheeks when he reached out and took my hand. After a second I pulled back from his grip, something about him was electrifying. The slightest touch made my fingers buzz. I chose to look at my feet so I couldn't make a fool of myself.

“I’m Shane.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and smirked at me. This didn’t make me feel any better.

“Thanks for catching me.” I felt the blush on my cheeks somehow deepen.

“If I wasn’t there that pretty little face of yours would have been ruined.” My mouth dropped open at this.  “Might wanna close that before you catch a fly.” He reached out and shut my mouth which infuriated me.

“Excuse me!” I exclaimed.

“What? I should have let you eat a fly?”  “No, but you didn’t give me a chance to shut it. I think it’s time for me to go good bye.” I went to leave but Chip had other ideas, I had completely forgotten he was with me. “Chip come-on it’s time to go.” I tugged on his leash but I’m so much weaker than him that it didn’t do much. The show must be good because it earned a deep chuckle which earned him a glare. “What’s so funny?” I said through clenched teeth.

“You, trying to pull that dog, who seems to be winning.” At this point I wanted to smack that grin off his face.

“It’s not that funny. It’s not my fault he’s bigger than me.”

“Here let me help.” He took the leash out of my hand and started walking, and Chip just followed him tongue lolled out of his mouth. Why would my dog listen to this person better than he does me? Storming down the stairs and snatched the leash out of his hand.  “Thank you.” I said grinding my teeth. “I also was wondering what grade are you in I’m a junior?”  “Funny so will I.”  As these words past his lips a gleam lit his eye. I couldn’t place what it meant.  “Oh great!”  I said with fake enthusiasm and smile before briskly walking away. Once I got home I forgot about our other neighbors I guess they would have to wait till tomorrow. I need to finish unpacking anyway. When I finished unpacking I showered. Then I decide to write in my journal.
