What do the four A's mean?

Amato Animo Animato Animagus is the spell to become an animagus. Amato comes from the Latin word "amo", which means "I love" or "I am obliged to". Animo and Animato both come from the Latin word "animo", which means "I animate" or "I fill with breath of life". And Animagus is a mix of the word "animal" and Latin word "magus" which means wizard, so Animagus means animal wizard. This four word incanation is the longest incanation to exist.

What animals are possible to be ones animagus?

Basically all of them. All the non-magic ones atleast. People are still debating if animagi can be magical creatures, though it's generally believed to be possible. However there is no known animagus who is a magical creature, so we don't know for sure. It was also a debate if animagi can be Dementors. The debate is still not settled, we can not know for sure, but it's generally believed that an animagus can not be a Dementor.

All known animagi:

There are actually more anigami than these people, for example there exists the magic school that focuses on transfiguration, where students are allowed to become animagi at 14, Uagadou School of Magic. Those students are not registered in the Ministry of Magic's register. It is also unknown if different countries have as strict laws about registration of animagi.

• Falco Aesalon - Falcon. An ancient Greek, the first animagus to be known.


• Clidona - Seabird. An Irish witch, who was the one to discovere the properties of Moondew. It was said that she could also turn into a wave, but that's not proven to be true yet.


• Morrigan - Crow. An Irish witch, she was a pure-blood and a historical figure associated with fate.


• Morgan le Fay - Bird. Also known as Morgana, she was a famous dark witch known to be the enemy of Merlin.


• Lisette de Lapin - White rabbit. While there is no proof of her being an animagus, many historians believe she was. She was a witch known for performing witchcraft infront of Muggles, resulting in a death sentence. However she escaped the night before her sentence in 1422, and has not been seen since.

All of those stated above were animagus before the registration system was law, so they we're all unregistered, since there was no register.

• Minerva McGonagall - Silver tabby cat. A transfiguartion professor at Hogwarts. She was registered.


• James Potter - Stag. The infamous Harry Potters father, part of the Maradeurs. He was unregistered.


• Sirius Black - Black dog. The black sheep of the black family, part of the Maradeurs. He was unregistered.


• Peter Pettigrew - Grey rat. He was a part of the Maradeurs, until he faked his death and started serving under Voldemort. He was unregistered.


• Rita Skeeter - Blue beetle. A great and famous journalist. She was unregistered.


• Adrian Tutley - Gerbil. He was affiliated with the International Symposium of Animagi. He was registered.


• Talbott Winger - Eagle. A student at Hogwarts, Ravenclaw. His parents were murdered by Death Eaters. He was unregistered. 


• Talbott Winger's mother [name unknown] - White Swan. A witch that took part in the first Wizarding War and was murdered by Death Eaters. She was registered.


• Olivier Kikkert - Frog. He was arrested by Alastor Moody for robbery and being an unregistered animagus.


• Bly - Lemur. He was a dark wizard.


• Ambrose Turner - Butterfly. He was murdered by Bly, who was searching for the Turner's family heirloom which Bly tought to be a great treausre.

As an ending to this very short book, I'd like to add that although it is not proven, some people believe that Godric Gryffindor himself was an animagus, and that he was a squid. This is however just a speculation some people have, personally I choose to believe in it. It doesn't really matter wheter he was or was not, since that fact doesn't change history in any way.
