NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y3 L2: Dangerous Doses

Chapter 21

Definitions and Clarifications:
A herbal remedy is a product which is mainly made up of herbs. The average potion does not count as a herbal remedy, even if it is used for healing. Testing herbal remedies can help improve the effectiveness, however there are still many products which haven't been tested. This is mainly due to two reasons... One, they have ancient origins, which may remain unknown to this day. And two, there is a stigma against older remdies, with people thinking there's no need to get them tested! When taking products you don't know what you're putting into your body unless you check the ingredients. This could cause you to become more sick. Some shops may even intially make you sick, however this normally only occurs within the black market.

Self Medication:
If you are trying to make your own herbal remedies, you should always consult with a healer before taking it. This is so your ingredients won't be dangerous and you won't accidently overdose yourself.

Just a Spoonful:
In the first year, we learnt about the WHIPS classes, including Class C, toxic which has four different levels of toxcicity which can be reached.

  • Level One: In order to become toxic, the plant must be consumed in illogical amounts before becoming a threat.

  • Level Two: The plant can be potentially lethal if consumed in moderate amounts.

  • Level Three: At this point, one or more potions with this ingredient has the potential to cause fatal results.

  • Level Four: These plants also only need to be consumed in small amounts to be fatal. It may be impossible to find an antidote since no side effects may be shown until you drop dead within 24 hours since consumption.

A safe dose to one person may be a deadly dose to another, based on their age, weight etc. Always remember to consult a professional before taking any product.

Oleander:
Nerium oleander is level four in Class C, toxic. Every part of this plant, including the colour flowers, bright foliage and root can be significantly lethal. It grows anywhere between 6-20 feet tall. Oleander should be grown in full sun to partial sun and planted in soil which has a level of anywhere between 5.0 to 8.3, however it certainly prefers a more alkaline soil. With the correct preperation, it can be sucessfully used within many potions which treat cancer symptoms, skin diseases and immune boosting tonics.
