NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y3 L1: Herbology, Healing, History

Chapter 20

History of Healing With Herbology:
Before the Statue of Secracy was put into place,  majority of those who worked in healing were witches or wizards. Herbs from all across the world have always played a big part in healing practices. Throughout history different civilisations have found new ways to incorporate herbology into their healing practices. For example, using plants for healing in Ancient Mesopotamia dates back to around 5,000 years ago. For the far east, the use of herbology can be dated back to as late as 6,000 years ago. Travelling around to find certain herbs was difficult in that time as appiration was an uncommon skill, the floo network system hadn't even been set up and broomsticks were still in the early stages of production.

If a certain plant didn't grow in your area then you didn't know much about it. Therefore, many different variations of potions were created. Just because a practice is out dated doesn't mean that it isn't good. They could perhaps be even more powerful than some of the modern practices in place today!

What is healing?
At the simpliest definition, healing is the act of helping someone overcome their illness. Illnesses can be both physical and mental.

Jade Vine:
Strongylodon macrobotrys is native to tropical areas of the Phillipines, making it hard to recreate the enviorment this blueish green vine needs. They can reach a height of up to 60 feet. It needs to have a soil pH of 6.1- 6.5, full sun and frequent watering. It should be kept in an area of 15 degrees celcius or higher and in humidity. The Humidity Spell can be used to do this. It is reccomended that the soil is fertalised once or twice a month. It can be used to treat infertilaty, hiccups and strange pain on your elbow. It is also used in Nebres' Nail Solution.

The Humidity Spell:

  • Incantation: Umens Aerum (OO-mens-AY-rum)

  • Wand movement: Three short vertical lines, from left to right

  • Willpower: High

  • Concentration: Low

Distinctions:
Herbal practices, remidies and uses are non magical and can be completed by muggles, whereas herbological practices can only be completed by witches and wizards.
