Herbology Notes
NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y2 L9: Charming Plants
Chapter 19
Plant Growth Charm:
- Incantation: Herbivicus (Her-BIH-vih-cuss)
- Wand movement: Three thin ovals
- Willpower: Medium
- Concentration: Medium
The Plant Growth Charm is certainly related to the Growth Starting Charm, however it will take a larger toll on plants and therefore is more difficult to cast. It can also be dangerous, as if pumped with too much magic, the plant could become dependent on it. The magic will override natrual growing processes, replacing roles which are usually performed by photosynthesis and absorption. If this occurs, the plant will stop growing, and may even cause the plant to stop gathering water and photosynthesising all together!
Rose Growth Charm:
- Incantation: Rosivicus (Roh-SIH-vih-cuss)
- Wand movement: Clockwise spiral, then a line down
- Willpower: Medium
- Concentration: Medium
Roses have their own seperate growth charm, as they are quite stubborn and don't always react well to the regular Plant Growth Charm. There may be a delay from a couple minutes up to an hour before the rose begins to grow, but eventually it will sprout!
Something a little different!
We will first begin by looking at the singing plant charm, which will cause the plant to vibrate enough to give off the impression that the plant is singing! Different plants have different tones and vocal ranges.
Singing Plant Charm:
- Incantation: Tinniherbus (Tih-knee-HER-bus)
- Wand movement: Point wand at chest, then the plant.
- Willpower: Low to medium
- Concentration: Low to high; depending on the complexity and the length of the tune.
And of course if you want a real show you need to make the plant dance as well! Your movements will be quite basic at this time. Concentrate on the rythms and motions which you wish the plant to follow, alongside any pauses.
Dancing Plant Charm:
- Incantation: Saltiherbus (Sal-tee-HER-bus)
- Wand movement: A wave to the left, then right
- Willpower: Low to medium
- Concentration: Low to high; depending on how complex the movements are.
Repotting:
There are two main reasons for repotting a plant. Firstly, the plant has outgrown its current pot and needs a bigger one, or the size of the plant needs to be controlled and you'd be this time transferring them into a smaller pot. Start by watering the plant and letting it absorb for around half an hour, which will make repotting the plant heaps easier! You can either extract the plant from its pot by manually doing so, by tapping on the pot and then slide it down so it lands in your glove. If the plant has become pot bound, you'll need to break it up, either seperating them by hand or making strategic cuts a half of an inch around the outside of the roots. Then you should place the plant into its new pot and fill in the empty space with soil.
For the magical way, we can use the Mobiliarbus Charm, which will help levitate the plant into its new pot. This is more effective than the Levitation Charm, as you may levitate the previous pot instead of the plant you're transferring. The charm also has different purposes, such as levitating other heavy objects. It is particullary used here at Hogwarts during the holiday season when decorating the castle!
Mobiliarbus Charm:
Incantation: Mobiliarbus (MOH-bih-lee-AR-bus)
Wand movement: Flick towards the target
Willpower: Low to medium; depending on the size of the object
Concentration: Low
