NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y2 L7: Soggy Sprouts

Chapter 17

Definitions and Distinctions:

  • Sumerged: The plant grows only underwater

  • Emersed: The plant either sticks out or sits on top of the water

  • Emergent: Grows along the shore

  • There are two types of water that plants grow in: Freshwater and saltwater.

Grow, grow, grow your boat:

The main difference between aquatic plants and normal foliage are their water requirements. Aquatic plants draw moisture, vitamins and minerals from the water which they are in, which makes the pH level and water quality more important than soil pH. The sunlight needed varies between plants. Planting may involve using moist soil, where as repotting requires the use of the Levitation Charm. When harvesting, shears should be used since spells struggle underwater.

Freshwater Flowers:

  • Arrowhead: Safittaria sagittifolia is an emersed water plant which has pointed leaves and white flowers. It can be invasive due to how easily it grows. Full sun is required, it is adaptable to multiple pH levels and should be sumerged in 1-2 feet of water. The flowers of the arrowhead are used in Drying Draught, where as the stem and leaves are used for experimental potions, which are mainly related to mental health.

  • Aquagius Root: Taxodium aquagius is an emergant magical plant which has root like protrusions. It is found in the southern areas of the US, grows regardless of the sunlight and prefers alkaline soil. A large body of water is required for culivation. The protrusions which store water can be harvested and used for a variety of reasons such as storing large amounts of water due to their magical properties.

  • Fairy Ferns: Incarvillea lysienne is a nocturnal and aquatic plant which is found within deep lakes. They can be grown in either full shade, partial shade of full shade. Their twinkling, luminescent flowers can be seen during full moons. The blossoms can be used in potions which ease tension and promote understanding, however they can also be used for their nice scent. You should avoid picking them under a new moon.

  • Marsh Marigold: This non magical emersed plant has yellow flowers and chartreuse stalks. They thrive within wet conditions, full or partcial sun and soil which has around a soil acidicity of 6.5. The leaves are used in potions for rashes and boils, where as the flowers help treat anemia and blood health. These plants should be planted underwater with shallow roots.

  • Water Hyacinth: Eichhornia crassipes is native to the Amazon and is an emerged plant. They have purple, white or blue flowers and are grown best within full sun. They can be easily culivated within warm greenhouses in Britian. They float on the surface of water and are not invasive. Roots have purification properties for antidotes and water purification potions. Dried and grounded roots can be used within anti-hermorrhaging points.
