NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y2 L3: Thinning the verd

Chapter 13

Weeding:

Weeding is important to prevent competetion among your plants for resources. Agressive and invasive plants can easily overtake an area and harm other plants. Effective weeding includes methods such as complete root removal, which is easier when the sol is moist. However, there are also reckless methods such as the Gouging Charm. Weeding potions are quite challenging due to how weeds differ quite a bit.

Pruning:

Pruning helps ensure your plants stay healthy by removing detrimental parts. Prunning also prevents the spread of pests or diesease. Aesthetically shaping a plant will also require prunning. Light prunning can be done quite easily, however heavier prunning has some guidelines. Avoid prunning evergreens and summer/fall bloomers should be prunned in winter and spring bloomers after fading. Tools should be sharp in order to produce clean cuts. Fertalize post prunning with a shield from the sun. Use the severing charm when dealing with more dangerous and resistant plants.

Diseases:

  • Dutch Elm Disease: A fugal spread by elm bark beetles. It causes spidery like bark patterns, withering branches and yellow leaves. It will slowly kill the plant over 20 years. In order to prevent this disease, cover with an oily substance. Prune and dispose of areas affected by the disease.

  • Root Rot: Affects plants with excess mosisture. Signs of this disease include wilting and drooping stems. In order to prevent root rot you should regulate watering and improve the drainage. Remove and isolate the affected plats. Apply fungicidal potion.

  • Silverleaf: A fungal disease which occurs in both magical and non magical trees, which turns leaves silver. Prune the affected branches and use Cantanker's Crust-Lifter. Unfortuntaly, this potion will be ineffective in advanced stages.

  • Poision Pox: Affects venomous plants, causing wilting, cracking and purple veins. It is treated with Toxeputus Depello potion during the early stages. Severly affected plants can be prunned or disinfected.

  • Bubotuber Blight: Infects magical plants with boil like pustules. Be sure to quickly prune the affected parts and apply Beauregard's Blight Be-Gone potion.

  • Elecano Stembrek Disease: Caused by a virus which attacks magical essence. It weakens stems and turns roots orange or yellow. This can make the plant lose their magical abilities. Water witholding can be used as a treatment. There is no prevention avaliable.

The Disinfecting Charm:

  • Incantation: Defaeco (Deh-FAE-coh)

  • Wand movement: Short lines up then followed to the right

  • Willpower: Low

  • Concentration: Low

Abyssinian Shrivelfig:

The Abyssinian Shrivelfig is a magical fruit which primarily grows in Abyssinia but is able to adapt to Persia and Mediterranean areas. It needs a pH level of 6.1 to 6.5, full sun, regular watering during its early stages and deep but infrequent watering for advanced trees. Ripe fruit is either purple or red and is found on tall trees with each limb producing manu shrivelfigs. It is used in shrinking potions, agong potions, wart removal and rash remedies. Harvest the shrivelfigs carefully using the severing charm.
