NOTE: These notes alone won't get you an E or O, you do need to look over the actual lesson. Use these notes as a study tool for studying or completing OPEN book quizzes. Y3 L1-L9 notes are in the progress of being taken. For now, they are unedited so do expect some spelling and grammar mistakes until I fully revise them.

Y2 L2: Garden grumbles

Chapter 12

Growing:
Although growing is less hands on, it is a vital stage for plants. Proper sunlight, watering and suitable soil is key. You should monitor plants during this stage regulary in order to prevent damage.

Gnomes:
Gnomes pose a challenge in gardens and even in greenhouses due to their tunnelling ability. Removing gnomes includes the spin and toss method or using a Javery. In order to better deter gnomes you can use valerian's scent. Early signs of infection include upturned soil patches and some missing roots. You can use the Growth-Starting Charm to aid the damaged plants.

Aphids:
Aphids are a pretty common non-magical garden pest, which infests both magical and non magical plants. You can identify the infection by spotting the small clustered forms on the leaves or stems which come in various colours. You can introduce predators or use the Scouring charm to remove soft-bodied bugs. Soapy water sprays however can be used for non- magical alternatives.

The Scouring Charm:

  • Incantation: Scourgify (SKUR-ji-fy)

  • Wand movement: An S shape

  • Willpower: Low to medium

  • Concentration: Low

Creepy crawlies:

  • Red Spider Mites: In order to identify this pest, look for plants which appear dusty and are covered with tiny red speaks. Both magical and non magical plants are affected, with faster infections occuring on magical plants.

  • Beetles: Look for chewed leaves. Unlike rapid producers, beetles are noticable and can be removed by hand or trapped in a net.

  • Chlorophillar: You can spot these magical caterpillars by flowery or leafy like apperance. Look for chewed leaves. Cholorophillars are most probmatic during their larval stage.

  • Chizpurfles: These pests target magical objects, creatures and plants. Watch out for unusual activity around magical objects. Use repellents to safeguard your plants against these pests.

  • Flesh-Eating Slugs: Identify the presence of these pests through the rapid destruction of plants, often fruits and vegtables. Watch for trails of the pests' acidic excretion. Wear dragon hide gloves whilst removing these pests and consider using repellents.

Bug Repelling Charm:

  • Incantation: Nonperiurabus (non-PEAR-ee-er-ah-bis)

  • Wand movement: A circle around the area

  • Willpower: Low to high; depending on the size of the area

  • Concentration: Moderate
