Potions- Week One

Chapter 41

Lesson One:

Notebook: Magical Drafts and Potions

Introduction to Potions and Classroom Safety

What is a potion?A potion is a magical mixture which can use magical ingredients, mundane ingredients, or both (more often than not). It is most likely brewed in a cauldron. Potions (rather generic term) are really concoctions that can produce a variety of effects, for example energy, enhancement and stimulation or brain activity, assist with ingested potions or flesh wounds, allow you to take on the appearance of another person, or even imitate death. It also utilizes many magical and mundane reactions and requires different methods and procedures while brewing. Like a spell, a chemical reaction or a recipe the difficulty of a potion may vary.

Only a Witch or Wizard should ever ingest or apply a Potion

Love potions? No potion or spell can create or replace true love. These so called "Love Potions" are most likely lust related Potions, or concoctions involving mundane ingredients that cause certain lustful reactions to those who consumed them.

Muggles and Potions: It is perhaps unsurprising that Muggles would have been none too please to learn that, in ancient times, they were being treated any differently from others in the community. However, it is impossible to sat if Muggles at the time were given any magical concoctions, or if they were simply provided with mundane remedies for their ills. Many Muggles continue to take advantage of the concept of "Potions", selling fraudulent liquid remedies to other Muggles, claiming that mixtures have magical powers. Some of these potions included vitamin-rich minerals and elements that did boost memory and cognition, while others included innocuous or occasionally harmful ingredients which did nothing of benefit for those who purchased and imbibed the solution. Snake Oil Salesman applies to those Muggles who sells good with fall information about their effectiveness. Most Muggles are do longer able to digest/stand really Potions.

Safety Rules of the Dungeon:

Dress Code: Always wear sufficiently covering clothing and close toe shoes. Do not wear bulky garments, long hanging jewellery and always remember to tie long hair back. Also, wear dragon hide gloves and goggles while around and/or managing Potions.

Working with Ingredients/Lab work: Remember to wait until you have gotten all need supplies before touching anything. Also, do not read ahead in textbooks unless or until told to.

Behaviour: No pranks or tricks, because they can cause great injury.

In the Event of an Accident: Do not panic, and take precautions about your own safety first. Then you can go find the teacher, who will escort you to the Infirmary if needed. If someone else has an accident, do not rush towards them. Stand out of the way and tell the teacher immediately. Likewise, please do not panic if something goes awry for someone else. Try to keep calm, and excuse yourself from the room if necessary.

Wand Safety: Be careful with your wands. Never point your wand directly at anyone else or at yourself in potions class.
