Defence Against The Dark Arts- Week Seven

Chapter 23

Lesson Seven

Fire Crabs and Werewolves

Fire Crabs: These fall under the beast category and are classified as XXX. This creature resembles a large tortoise, and as a grey-green shell covered in jewels. There are a few variants of the creatures are identified by the jewels on their shell- these include rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. They have grey skin and black eyes. They are native to Fiji and are a protective species, and are greatly protected from the Muggles. The shells are often used as a prized cauldron and may be sold and exported as pets. In order to become an owner, one must have a license. When provoked, they can shoot flames out of their rear ends. When handling the creature, one must wear dragon hide gloves, not wear loose clothing, not make any sudden movements, near stand behind the creature, and always have your wand in hand. A weak Knockback Jinx is all you should use in self defence. A more advance wizard or witch can use a water spell, which prevents the handler and the crab from harm. Fun fact: Rubeus Hagrid once bred a fire crab with a Manticore. The result was a Blast-Ended Skrewt, an extremely dangerous creature when fully grown.

Werewolves: These creatures only pose a threat to humans, as they are not likely to attack animals. It is best to avoid them during transformation, if you get bitten, all you can do is take care of the wound and become a werewolf yourself.  All you can do prevent infection is:

  • Firstly, get to a safe place. You can’t properly clean the wound until you are safe.

  • Rinse the wound under cool water for 2 minutes.

  • Wash the bite with soap for 5 minutes.

  • Let it air dry.

  • Apply an antibacterial potion and let dry.

  • Apply a healing potion, such as Essence of Dittany. If you do not have one, contact the nearest magical medical facility.

  • Cover the wound with an appropriately sized bandage.

  • Change the bandage and apply more salve every 4 hours.

  • A potion to help with pain may be used.

  •   If an infection does happen, go to the nearest magical medical facility. The signs of infection are:
    • Feverish skin around the bite

    • Dark red skin around the bite

    • Pus draining from the bite

    • Abnormal swelling that does not go down
