Astronomy- Week One

Chapter 1

Lesson One:

Introduction

Astronomy: The study of our universe. It is a branch of science that deals with celestial objects (planets, stars, moons, nebulae and galaxies), space and includes the physics, chemistry and evolution of such objects.

Solar System:

Our galaxy is the Milky Way. It has eight planets that all rotate around the sun, in a counter clockwise direction each at their own pace. The solar system is divided into two parts: The Inner Solar System and The Outer Solar System. The I.S.S is made up of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, while the O.S.S is composed of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They are separated by the Asteroid Belt, which contains over 7,000 asteroids!

Stars:

The Milky Way galaxy is made up of billions of stars. Stars are balls of hydrogen and helium that have nuclear fusion at its core. That nuclear fusion makes the star luminous. (A self-luminous object that shines through the release of energy produced by the nuclear fusion at its core. Stars are made up of hydrogen and helium.) Stars have been important to navigation and religion to even the earliest of civilizations. In fact, it was such civilizations that noticed the stars forming patterns. They were called constellations, and in 1929, the International Astronomical Union officially recognized 88 of them. Fun fact: The Big Dipper is not one of those 88 constellations.

Zodiac:

Twelve of those constellations were found to be more or less in line with the equator, so they were chosen to because The Zodiac Signs. They are Aries, Aquarius, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Pisces, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Taurus and Virgo. It is important to note that the study of these signs in relation to determining one’s fortune or characteristic is astrology or astromancy, and is completely unrelated to astronomy
