Lesson 2: Tools of the Trade

Chapter 1

  • Protective Gear

    • Dragonhide gloves

    • Earmuffs

    • Wand

    • Closed-toe shoes

    • Apron

    • Mask



  • Cloak and tie should not be worn to Herbology

  • Essence of Dittany and Antidote to Common Poisons available in the greenhouses

  • Over 30,000 witches and wizards have preventable accidents each year

  • Tending Gear

    • Dragon Dung

      • Fertilizer for soil

      • Can be mixed in with compost to make a more delicate organic fertilizer

      • Scentless



    • Mooncalf Dung

      • Can be used as fertilizer

      • Preferred for planting and caring for more sensitive and fragile plants

      • Lacks the potency of dragon dung



    • Centaur Tears

      • Favorite drink of plants

      • More vitamin rich then regular water

      • Some plants find them toxic i.e. do not water plants that grow in salt water with centaur tears





  • Cauldrons

    • Pewter

      • Good for beginners

      • Prone to melting and explosions due to low melting point



    • Brass

      • Higher melting point (920 degrees Celsius)

      • Resistent to wear and tear from burning plants

      • Plant material that gets stuck in the cauldron and begins burning will react with the brass and produce a green-blue fire



    • Copper

      • Melting point of 1085 degrees Celsius

      • Withstand the same class of burning plants brass can, and even some of the more reactive ones



    • Silver

      • Good for nocturnal plants

      • Melting point between 780 and 962 degrees Celsius



    • Gold

      • Interacts well with all plants

      • Melting point of 1064 degrees Celsius

      • Resists acid released by plants

      • Do not buy cheaper versions, typically made of Fool's Gold
