Lesson 2; Spellcasting Basics

Chapter 2
The Source of Your Magic

Blood Status and Breeds

  • Squibs are children birthed by magical parents, but they contain no magical traits. Despite a Squib’s inability to use magic, they still possess the limited ability to detect magical activity or use magical devices.

  • Muggle-Borns. It’s also possible that the children of muggles several generations removed from magical heritage can possess magical ability; these individuals are often described as “Muggle-born.”

  • Pure-bloods are witches and wizards with no Muggles in their bloodline. Their blood is purely magical.

  • Half-bloods are witches or wizards with a single magical parent and one non-magical [muggle] parent.

Important notes to mention

  • Intention and will matter.

Spellcasting Components

An Overview of the The Four Components of Spellcasting

  1. Incantation and Pronunciation

Incantation is, in simple words, the magic words. These words must be spoken with the correct pronunciation for the spell to cast. If it is spoken incorrectly, the worst that can happen is a possibility. Wizard Baruffio was known to accidentally replace the letter f with s and found a buffalo sitting at his chest.

  1. Wand Movement

Wand movements are an abundance of different shapes the caster creates in the air to help cast their spell. It is possible to have no need for a wand or wand movements, but it takes time and practice. Professor Albus Dumbledore is a known wizard who has no need for a wand.

  1. Willpower

Willpower is the strength and focus to correctly preform a spell. It is simply just a mental push, but it is considered one of the most difficult components to master.

  1. Concentration

Concentration is your focus and desire to set a target and use your spell. Though concentration this is not at all criticism to spellcasting, it is still vital to exercise your mind and body.

‘Flight’ Charms

  • Hover Charm

▸ This charm is one of the few to attempt to outshine the levitation charm, Wingardium Leviosa. But it also requires physical touch to allow the target to move upward or downward.

𐬹 Incantation: Levioso (lev-ee-O-so)

𐬹 Wand Movement: Inward spiral than upward flick.

𐬹 Willpower: Moderate; determines how heavy of an object can be lifted.

𐬹 Concentration: None.

  • Rocket Charm

▸ This charm is capable of propelling an object straight up into the air and back down again. It should be noted that the height is not very significant and heavier objects will move less, making this a fairly impractical charm with limited use.

𐬹 Incantation: Alarte Ascendare (A-lar-tay a-SEN-day-ray)

𐬹 Wand Movement: Quick swish.

𐬹 Willpower: High; determines how high the object will ascend before falling.

𐬹 Concentration: None.

  • Floating Charm

▸ This charm allows the user to move a target vertically without requiring physical contact. The target can be a distance away. The target, which are only items, can be lifted only a handful of feet into the air, and can only float up and down. Shopkeepers and the occasional witch or wizard doing some spring cleaning could levitate an object long enough to then clean and see what was underneath it.

𐬹 Incantation: Fluito (floo-EE-toe)

𐬹 Wand Movement: Jab then upwards flick.

𐬹 Willpower: High and higher, depending on weight and distance of the target.

𐬹 Concentration: Moderate.

  • Levitation Charm

▸ This charm invented by Jarleth Hobart allows the user to move a target higher, backwards, forwards and side to side. The user can also levitate humans, but they must be well-studied and practiced. Students attending Hogwarts should never attempt this charm, seeing as they are under practiced. With effort, this charm allows the user to levitate objects much heavier than themselves, with practice and concentration, as well.

𐬹 Incantation: Wingardium Leviosa (win-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa)

𐬹 Wand Movement: Swish and flick. (As the caster says Wingardium, began swishing. As the user finishes chanting Leviosa, do the flick motion.)

𐬹 Willpower: Low; Visualize your energy coming from your body and lifting the object.

𐬹 Concentration: Moderate; on the thing you want to levitate.
