Chapter 6: Astrid

Chapter 8

“Astrid, we been walking for hours,” Keith complained as his feet dragged across the empty and desolate pavement of New York. "Can we please take a small break?”

“Why are you being such a child?” I replied with a touch of annoyance in my voice.

“Aren’t you supposed to be a soldier? And besides, it’s only been forty minutes. I just checked my watch.”

“Oh I don’t know, Keith said sarcastically, “Maybe because I just had a helicopter pulled out of me by some random person whom I don’t even know?”

"Really, you think that's difficult? Try having glass shards all over your body and then having them pulled out. And I had to keep walking to find some aid." I rolled her eyes, it's called perseverance idiot.

“Astrid wait,” Keith called out. I halted and turned around to face him, my hands crossed my chest.

“Look, I’m sorry okay?” Keith tells me. “This has just been one crazy day, and I am having a lot of trouble dealing with it. Besides, its getting pretty dark, and I think we should find some place to stay the night, okay?”

I sighed,"Yeah, I know the feeling of having trouble of soaking all the crazy up. Come on, let’s look for a place to camp down for a while." I hate admitting things.

I turn and start to scout out the buildings in our area, trying to discern which one is the strongest, and which ones probably have some food that is still edible left inside of them.

Suddenly, I hear Keith yell out my voice. I turn around almost instantly, at the same time grabbing my knife from my belt.

I see Keith gripping something in his hands, but it is too dark for me to register what it is. What I can see clearly are a pair of shining yellow eyes peering out of the darkness. The terrifying part though is that the eyes are suspended several feet in air. Making an educated guess, it's taller than the two of us.

A low growl emanates from beneath its eyes, but I can’t tell how far down. The growl then turns into a snarl, but it is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. The eyes then start to get bigger and rounder, and it takes me a second before I realize that it is actually coming closer, and heading right towards Keith.

Suddenly, I hear a gunshot from right in front of me. I look down and I see Keith kneeling and realize that what he was holding had been a gun. My eyes shoot back to the creature in the dark. A shot from that distance should have seriously injured it, but when I look into its eyes all I see is pure hatred.

My eyes widen in fear. How can we beat this monster if a gun can’t? Then I have an idea.

“Keith, you need to distract it!” I yell as the monster grows ever closer. “If you can then I can get a good shot at it!”

I observed Keith pick up something unknown for me since I was unable to see. He hurled the item at it and I lunged at it from behind, knife in hand. Once I reached the wolf-like monster, I stabbed it where there was a place of yellow markings on top of a patch of fur. I was able to see this since a light had been turned on.

I realized the light was a flashlight, when Keith had thrown it, turning the button on.

I looked for the heart of the monster. I thought back to the times I played my Worgen character on World of Warcraft with my parents. I located it and stabbed it there, hopefully murdering it. I fell to the ground and hit my head incredibly hard.

Through the corner of my eye I saw Keith running away from the falling body of the beast, but my thoughts were not him on. I just had one thought running through my mind: Was it actually dead?

I groaned, and then started screaming. My head and body throbbed in pain.

I see a blurry Keith rush over away from the body of the creature and kneel next to me.

“Astrid, are you okay?” I hear him say.

"No, I feel-" I threw up to my left.

I place a comforting hand on my newfound comrade’s shoulder, but when i take it back it is covered in blood. “You’re bleeding at the back of your head,” he says to me. “I think the creature scratched you. But you did it. You did it Astrid. It’s dead.”

Croaking, I said,"Of course I did. Now takeout my first aid kit, there's a needle and some thread. Also, knock me out."

“You certainly did,” Keith replies with a small smile. “But what was that thing? I’ve never seen or heard anything like it.” Keith grabbed the things I instructed him and started putting them together.

"It's similar to a werewolf or Worgen." I barely managed to say. I started squirming and whimpering. I did not like the feeling of being vulnerable.

After his work, I eventually woke up and it was only 1 AM.

Suddenly, we both hear a howl from the distance, similar to the that the creature we just killed made.

“Astrid, we need to get inside now,” Keith says to me. “It is pitch black and i think there are more of these wolf-things on the way.

"Alright." I got up shakily, grabbing the flashlight and my knife. My forehead aches from where he knocked me out.

I stumble, and my knife slips out of my hand. Keith bends down, grabs it, and places it in my belt. Then he puts my free arm over his shoulder, and we start walking towards the nearest building.

Ten minutes later we are on the top floor of what used to be a three story apartment building, as the silence of the night is continually broken by the howls of wolves.
