My head hurt like hell. It was throbbing and burning, and everything was dark. I literally could not see in front of me. I then realized that my eyes were shut. I opened them, and barely one foot away from me was a pair of plain white tennis shoes. I looked up, and saw that those shoes were being worn by a girl. At first she looked like a normal 15 year girl, dressed in a casual light blue sweatshirt with a pair of dark blue boot-cut jeans, but something seemed a bit off about her, almost...menacing. Suddenly, she jerked around, and our eyes met. (Keith)

I stared at the compass and the man, my eyes darted back and forth between the two. I yanked the knife hidden in my back-pocket and approached closer the the man. I hesitated, which was unusual. The man looked familiar, but it was not in my grasp. I lunged forward, clutching the knife in my right hand, and pressed the sharp tool against his throat. "Who are you?!" I demanded. (Astrid)

"Kkkkeith," I stammered, hardly daring to draw a breath. "Keith Douglas. What do you want from me? Please, I don't have anything of value. I just jumped out of a helicopter, I don't know if my comrades are even alive, and I have a shard of God knows what stuck in my head." (Keith)

"I will answer one of those questions for you," I said to the man who claimed his name was Keith . And I pointed towards the remains of the helicopter which I had just come from. (Astrid)

I looked to where the girl was pointing, and I instantly recognized it as the one that I had been in just hours before. But it was different. All of one side was missing, and there were no windows left. But what really caught my eye were my comrades. At least, what was left of them. For most of them were no longer in just one piece. (Keith)

I felt sick, like I was going to vomit. But then a searing pain came out of nowhere and attacked my head, and I collapsed to the ground, gripping my head and moaning in grief and pain. From the corner of my eye I saw the girl look at me, and what may have even been a small flicker of concern on her face. (Keith)

I saw Keith fall to the ground in agony, and when he clutched his hands to his head I knew what had to be done. "This is gonna hurt a lot, hold on to something." I advised him. (Astrid)

"Wait, what!" I exclaimed. "What are you.." (Keith)

"Hold on to something!" I screamed at Kieth. Swiftly, I got out the first aid kit I had in my string backpack. I plucked out a rubbing alcohol wipe and closed the box. The knife ripped through my shirt easily. I set the rubbing alcohol wipe and the piece of cloth on the ground and then lay my hands upon the glass shard that hung out of Keith's head. I yanked on it, and it made me stumble back a little bit. Regaining my balance, I grabbed the wipe and dabbed it on his bleeding wound. I wrapped the cloth around his head to, hopefully, stop the bleeding. "It isn't too deeply cut or you would be dead." I informed him. (Astrid)

When the girl pulled out the shrapnel from me, I felt both unable to breath and like I had to scream at the exact same time. My vision clouded, and I felt my body jerk. I thought that I would pass out from the pain. But a few seconds later the pain became bearable, and a few more after that I was able to see. I saw the girl applying pressure to what I was sure was a gaping hole in the side of my head, but the strange part was that she seemed to be knowing what she was doing, and was not grossed out in the least. (Keith)

"Who are you?," I asked the girl. "Why are you helping me? And how were you able to pull that thing out of my head like a pro?" (Keith)

"Astrid is my name. I was being trained to become a doctor before I saw my parents being slaughtered." I told Keith coldly. (Astrid)

"Oh, I'm sorry," I replied. "What happened to them?" (Keith)

I stared at Keith blankly,"My parent's were slaughtered with a butcher's knife? And I saw it, and I watched it with nothing I could do." (Astrid)

"Oh my god, that must have been awful," I said as I absent-mindedly put my hands in my pockets. But then I realized that something was off. (Keith)

"The...the thing!," I exclaimed to Astrid, as she looked on bewildered. "there was something in my pocket, but it's gone now! Did you see it fall out!" (Keith)

"Dumb-ass," I muttered. I flashed the compass to Keith," I stole it from you." (Astrid)

I looked at the compass that Astrid was holding. "You broke it!" I exclaimed as I grabbed the compass. "It's not pointing North." (Keith)

"It was pointing like that when I found it," Astrid replied as she took the compass back. (Astrid)

I get up, and walk to where Astrid is standing. "Which way is it pointing?" (Keith)

"Southeast." I say to Keith. (Astrid)

"Well then," I reply back to her,  "we'd better start walking." (Keith)

We turned around and started treading to the Southeast. I take my compass back from Astrid, which she reluctantly relinquishes, as the sun begins to set. (Keith)
