Chapter 3: Astrid
Chapter 5
I peered over my shoulder to see if anyone was paying attention to me. The streets were vacant, but had not been merely a few seconds ago. I casually walked inside of the apartment building and took the elevator the the 2nd floor. I slipped my hand into my back pocket and pulled out my lock picking set. I tightened my hoodie to make sure it still covered my face, it did. My pick slipped into the lock of the door and fiddled around with it for a bit. The door unlocked and I entered the apartment.
The silver locket sparkled in the jewelry box. I took my glove-covered hands and picked up the locket and weaved it through my fingers. I dropped the locket subtlety by the sound of an explosion. I darted out the door and out of the apartment complex. I dropped my hoodie down to looked around New York streets, to see a volcano-like eruption. Bombs, bombs were being dropped. I took of my gloves and stashed them into my pocket with the money I had stolen. People were out on the street panicking.
My footsteps banged on the steel steps as I ran up the staircase to reach the roof. I saw a fire alarm and pulled it, as I saw a spark. I continued up the stairs and finally reaching the door. I turned the knob and pushed the door open. There was smoke everywhere, I coughed then covered my mouth with the sleeve of my sweatshirt. I blinked a few times to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, I wasn't.
"War, It's War," I whispered to myself as I saw a helicopter in the distance come crashing down.
I turned around walked back into the building thundering down the stairs.
The apartment building came crashing down. I heard the sound of people screaming and class shattering. My mind blanked out for a second. I came back to reality then sprinted out of the way so the building didn't land on me, I ran in the direction of the helicopter I saw earlier to see if I could loot anything.
My head spun in all kinds of directions. I was still trying to get used to the fact that the world has become a Wasteland. Or should I say America, the other continents were extinct with living souls. Humanity, for that matter, was almost extinct.
I sighed, this all happened because of terrorists. I hope they rot in Hell. I got out of my thoughts and ran to the piece of metal I just saw. It was a helicopter, I'm not sure if it was the exact same helicopter I saw though. I ignored that and went ahead anyways. I got to the piece of metal which led to the rest of the helicopter. I put my hand on a pointed piece of metal and it cut through the center of my palm. I winced then isolated it as I climbed inside the air vehicle. Dead bodies lay still on the floor of the Helicopter.
I crouched to the ground and started going through their pockets. I found a few dog tags and tossed those out, some guns, and some ammo. I stashed the guns and ammo in my string backpack and looked around some more. I found a fire-proof bag and opened it up. Rations and freshwater, my mouth watered up. The rations included dry fruit, beef jerky, crackers, and johnny cakes. I also found a tin cup. I took the items I found and put them in my string backpack along with the guns and ammo and other stuff I had (matches, clothing items, a first aid kit, a thin blanket, and money- which was useless now). I had really lucked out this time.
I found nothing else inside the Helicopter so I stepped outside of it to see if anything had fallen out. Only a man had fallen out, he had a piece of glass in the side of his head. I saw something sticking on the outside of the pocket so I stretched my hand and seized it. It was a compass. I immediately noticed that it was broken, because it wasn’t pointing North. Suddenly, I heard a sharp intake of breath and coughing behind me. I turned, and my eyes met the man’s.
