Lesson 7: Categories of spells
Chapter 7
Spell Catogorization
- The category that a spell falls into is based on the concentration and the end product and desired effect of the spell
- Organized into two groups; static or dynamic
- Categorizing spell idea came from a spellwork convention in 2016
Static Spell
- Ex: Lumos, wand-lighting charm, Fire-Making charm
- Defend by educational decree number 13 ; spells wherein one no longer has influence over the condition of the target once the casting has finished
- Spells that one cast have an immediate effect that you cannot change until the spell is complete
- Requires no prolonged concentration
Dynamic Spell
- Spells where in the caster may maintain some connection to and/or influence over a target, even after the casting has been completed
- Spells where you must maintain a flow of concentration with the spell in order to keep the spell going
- Ex: Mending Charm, the severing charm, Fire-making charm
- Some spells that fall into both categories, depending on the effect that you want Ex: Fire making charm, static would be to ignite some target that you concentrate on, dynamic would be a jet of flames that can be conjured because of it's continuous effect
The Severing Charm
- Incantation: Diffindo (deef-IN-doe)
- Wand Movement: V-Shaped down and up, ending with a swish in the direction to cut
- Willpower: Low
- Concentration: Moderate; The place to cut and depth of the slice
- Category: Dynamic
- Invented at some point in the 1400's by seamstress Defina Crimp
- Allows caster to precisely cut the target they are focused upon
- Caster should finish sayng spell while performing a swish in the direction of the cut
- Mishaps: Nothing happens, only partially severed, cut could be ragged, accidentally cut something not intended to be cut
- Practice spell in open area
- Not effective to animals and other life forms
The Softening Charm
- Incantation: Spongify (SPHON-jee-fye)
- Wand Movement: S-shape
- Willpower: Moderate
- Concentrate: Moderate; the target object
- Category: Static
- Temporarily modifies the properties of the target object, making it squishy and slightly bouncy like a plush toy but not a stuffed animal, closer to a rubber ball
- Ex: On a book could sink further into the cover, throw it on the ground and watch it bounce up a bit
- Less devastating than severing charm if casted immediatley
- Mishaps: Nothing happening, wears off instantley, only slightly softend, doesnt bounce when dropped, lose softness far more quickly
- Useless against living matter, attempting to cast it upon a living thing can cause nothing to happen to their living cells, through hair, nails, and fur might be a little softer for a short time
- Metal and stone don't absorb magic for a noticable effect, expirienced witches/and wizards may be able to soften them if enough willpower is applied
