Lesson 2: Spellcasting Basics

Chapter 2

The source of your magic

  • Squib- Someone with no magical ability

  • Squibs still posess the limited ability to detect magical activity or use magical devices

  • Possible that the children of muggles several generations removed from magical heritage can posess magical ability; these individuals are often described as "Muggle Born"

  • Pure Blood- Witches and wizards with no muggles in their bloodline. Their blood is purely magical

  • Half-Blood- Witch/Wizard with one magical parent and one non-magical or muggle born parent.

Spellcasting Components

  • Spellcasting components; Incantations(Pronunciation), wand movement, willpower, concentration

  • Incantation- The "Magic Words". Must be spoken with proper pronunciation. Proffesor Filius Flitwick likes to say "Never forget wizard Baruffi who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest." Some very advanced witches and wizards can cast spells without the use of an incantation.

  • Wand Movement- Shape you make in the air with your wand to help shape a spell. Uncommon to cast spell without a wand. Proffesor Albus Dumbledore can demonstrate the caliber of magic it takes to perform a spell with no wand.

  • Willpower- Magical strength and focus needed to correctly perform a spell. The mental push/components to master, but it is key to master advanced magic.

  • Concentration- Centering your mind and the desired effect in order to make a spell work. Includes the target of your magic and what you want your magic to do. Not critical to all spellcasting. Physical strength always equal magical power either.

"Flight" Charms

  • Wingardium leviosa = Levitation Charm

  • Hover charm; once cast upon an object that you are physically touching in some way, allows you to move object up and down. Imitation spell of levitating spell.

Hover Charm

  • Incantation- Leviosa (lev-ee-O-sa)

  • Wand Movement- Inward spell then upward flick

  • Willpower- High; Determines how heavy and object can be lifted

  • Concentration- None

  • Rocket charm; does not require that you touch your target.

  • Only capable of propelling any object straight up inro the air and back down again.

  • Height is not very significant and heavier objects will move less, making charm fairly impratical

Rocket Charm

  • Incantion- Alarte Ascendare (A-lar-tay a-SEN-day-ray)

  • Wand Movement- Quick swish

  • Willpower- High; Determines how high the object will ascend before falling

  • Concentration- None

  • Some time after the spells were created, the floating charm was developed

  • This spell can target a distant object rather than requiring physical contact

  • Involves controlled vertical movement

  • Objects can only be levitated a handful of feet into the air, cannot be directed to move any other way besides up or down

Floating Charm

  • Incantation- Fluito (floo-EE-toe)

  • Wand Movement- Jab then upward flick

  • Willpower- High to very high depending on weight and distance of object

  • Concentration- Moderate; should be maintained on target object

  • The levitation charm, invented by Jarleth Hobart, closest wizarding world has come to true flight

  • Allows the caster to control not only vertical movement of an object but it's movement back and forth or side to side

  • Height is less of a restriction

  • Allows you to lift objects noramlly too heavy to be lifted by yourself

  • Can be used on humans, but should only be done by advanced wizards/witches

  • Can cause serious injury from force of being throwin in the air and then falling back to the ground with nothing slowing them down

Levitation Charm

  • Incantation- Wingardium Leviosa (win-Gar-dee-um levi-O-sa)

  • Wand Movement- Swish and flick

  • Willpower- Low; visualize your energy coming from your body and lifting the object

  • Concentration- Moderate; on the thing you want to levitate

  • As you say wingardium start the swish motion

  • Time the swish so that it ends just after you begin saying leviosa

  • As you finish saying leviosa, do the flick

  • Keep your mind focused on the target of your spell and visualize drawing energy from your body as we practiced before
