Lesson 1: Intro to charms
Chapter 1
Charms Syllabus (Lesson, Topics, Spells)
- One: Introducction/history/ and ancient foci, Lumos/nox
- Two: Assessing your powers (Flight Charms)
- Three: Wand properties and movements (Alohomara, Reparo)
- Four: The spoken word-incantations (Incendio, Locomotor)
- Five: The importance of concentration (Lumos, Solem, Lumos Numerosa)

Charms Journal
- You are responsible for keeping a journal of charms. Journal meant to be a record for your throats and observations during class and while practicing charms. Each lesson, 2-5 paragraphs of information willneed to be written into the journal. Each paragraph must have at least 5 sentences. Each lesson should have to at least 10 sentences about it.

- Assignments will be marked for both content and language

Introduction
- Introduction to spellcasting in general. First year will cover the basics of spellcasting including importance of pronouncing a spell correctly and practicing wand movement as well as casting basic charm
- Will touch on basics of wand lore, such as need for a wand for proper spellcasting, which wands are typically made of, why itÅ› important to porperly care for them. Also discusses the various components that may be required to sucessfully cast certain spells.
Brief history and essential laws
- Magic was practiced much more openly and freely in ancient times
- Ancient greece, and ancient egypt witches/wizards were held in high regard
- Used magic to protect ancient tombs, even today curse-breakers working for gringotts attempt to retrieve the treasures from withing, sometimes with a loss of limb
Wand Making
- First instances of dedicated wand making lies with the Ollivander family, who have been making wands since 382 B.C.E. Family one of first and longest to have practiced the craft
Magical Government
- Around 1,000 C.E wizarding world began sperating from muggles
- For apporxiimatly 400 years (1,000 C.E- 1,400) wizarding world was ruled by the council of warlocks
- Various magical governments were estabolished based on ethnic and cultural values as well as location
Witch/Wizard Persecution
- Persecuted throughout the 1600's, with such things as the witch burnings, they proved ineffective due to flame-freezing charms
- Flame-freezing charms can be cut on the flames burning a witch to make them do nothing more than tickle the witch in question
- Witch would then pretend to writhe in agony, pretending to burn, then she would be safe
- The problems culminated into the introduction of the international statute of secrecy in 1689
- This international law completed the seperation of the two worlds
- Law created to protect the magical and non-magical communities from each other, when witch trials began wizard kind were seeking revenge on the muggles who tried to opress them
- Each government became responsible for hiding all evidence of magical activity withing their borders, including the magical flora and fauna of the wizarding world
- Signed in 1689, took a further three years before it was officially estabolished by all governments internationally
Magical Legend
- Over the centuries magic has become legends to muggles
- Many muggles contemporary literature is full of encounters with witches and wizards, dragons, pixies, and many other kinds of magic that they dismiss as wild dreams or hallucination
- Majority of muggle stories are rooted in fact, most are eyewitness accounts of muggles seeing magic done, that have changed over time
- When incident is too big to ignore ministry sends accidental magic reversal squad to sort things out, usually through memory modification
Decree for the reasonable restriction of underage society
- Anyone under the age of 17 falls under this la
- Estabolished in 1875
- No student is allowed to practice magic outside of the school
- Exceptions when your life or another witch/wizard's life is at stake
- Under effects of trace until age 17, any magic performed while not at hogwarts or hogsmeade, or in an exception zone, will be immediately detected
Magic and muggle homes
- Ministry able to tell the difference between muggle and magical homes where trace is concerned
- Magical homes afults will be casting, so casting underage magic will not be detected as easily
- Ministry can see where magic is, but not who is casting
The discovery of wands
- Uncontrolled bursts of magic where the norm school millenia ago before wizards were able to focus and control their powers
- Only those with weak magic affinity were able to lead normal lives
- Other caused great destruction, which were noticable enough to become muggle mythlogy
Wands
- primitive tools like crystals, crude wands made made of little more than a hippogriff wing feather wrapped around a stick, and metal rods all allowed some to exert a level of control over their magic
- Modern wands: a wooden shaft containing a core from a powerful magical creature, the wand allows us to focus and channel our power to achieve the desired effect
The wand-lighting charm and extinguishing charms
- Spell will allow you to illuminate the tip of your wand
- First known use was in the 18th century
- Magical historical credit Levina Monkstanley, a ministry of magic employee, for it's invention
- First demonstrated in 1772 when ms.monkstanley had dropped her quill on the ground and used to spell to find it
- Provides entertainment as well, changes color
- Good for casting votes in the ministry of magic
- REpel incorporal threats such as the Gytrash (spectral hound) and other malevolent spirits
- Incantation: Lumos
- Wand movement: Single counter-clockwise loop
- Pronunciation: LOO-mos
- Willpower: Low: determines the color of the light
- Concentration: Low; Lighting up the top of your wand
- If you put too much willpower or mental push into the tip of your wand will turn scarlet
- Too little and it will be a pearly white
- Aim for a nice light yellow
- Flow of magical energy does not need to be conciously maintained, due to the fact it does'nt leave wand tip
- Wand extinguishing charm, the counter spell
- Incantation: Nox
- Willpower: None
- Pronunciation: NOCK-ss
- Conentration: None
- Wand movement: Flick of the wand
- Can be quickly cast and effect is immediate
- No harm or backlash
