Lesson Four: The Sleeping Draught Study Guide

Chapter 5

This style of the potion is made in pewter cauldrons & uses Celsius temperature.


Valerian was used in ancient Mesopotamia. Its benefits was that healers could authorize using it for magical creatures & mundane creatures. In the nineteenth century, Bellaluna Alva's suffered from insomnia & created this potion to alleviate the symptoms. Due to taking the potion, she lost her desire to research & instead decided to teach potions at Beauxbatons.


Estimated Brewing Time (EBT): 1 hour, 1 minute, 30 seconds

Ingredients:
500 mL of water
2 tbsp of Flobberworm Mucus
4 medium lavender sprigs
4 medium valerian sprigs
2 small mint sprigs
4 tbsp of vanilla extract


Instructions


1. Add 500 mL of water & set the heat to 45 degrees Celsius.
2. Add 4 lavender & 2 mint sprigs to a mortar & pestle. Crush to a fine creamy dust.
3. Add 2 tbsp of Flobberworm Mucus.
4. Add 2 tbsp of vanilla extract.
5. Increase heat to 121 degrees Celsius for 30 seconds & bring heat back to 45 degrees Celsius.
6. Add 3 tbsp of the crushed lavender & mint sprigs to the cauldron.
7. Stir twice counter-clockwise.
8. Brew for 35 minutes. The potion should be a pale green color with a light orange smoke.
9. Add 2 tbsp of vanilla extract & heat to 121 degrees Celsius for 60 seconds.
10. Add 4 valerian sprigs.
11. Stir 7 times clockwise.
12. Brew for 20 minutes. The potion should be an indigo color with a pale pink smoke.
13. Remove cauldron from heat & cool the potion for 5 minutes. Stir gently with a non-magical implement. Use a funnel or the Siphoning Charm.


Usage Notes


This potion is not habit-forming & is used for insomnia & sleep disorders. Children who are five & under should not use this potion unless they are teething. Talk to a healer before using this potion if you are pregnant. Use five to seven drops on the tongue or in a hot cup of herbal tea. Do not apparate, fly, operate dangerous instruments, or undertake concentration & alertness tasks due to a decrease in muscle or hand eye-coordination. Slight dry mouth, hives, & itchy mouth reactions can occur. Store in a cool, dry, dark place in a tinted phial. Use within one year.
