Lesson Three: Research Ethics Study Guide

Chapter 4

Why It Matters & Testing

The amount of benefits & discoveries that research offers are something of value for the wizard world. Be sure to have either a theory or an hypothesis before your research begins. When funding gets involved, you must have theoretical validity to prove your theory is valuable to the wizard community. Once your research has concluded, either testing it on yourself or having clinical trials for a particular illness is crucial to test if it really works. Testing should only be done after researching that it is safe for the public to use. Back then, mundane & magical creatures were almost always tested on before the magical public. Today, beasts' rights activists are encouraging researchers to use other methods in place of testing creatures.

Who Gets Involved & The Consequences

Trial potions are tested among the healthy public to execute the precise dosages & to reveal common unharmful side effects. The targeted public for which the potion will be used for, will be the last group to take the potion. This is so the potion can undergo improvements before those who have weak immune systems take it. The next step is for those impacted to take the potion. Those whose illness is severe may opt to be in the trials. It's never required to take part in the clinical trials. When running a trial, fair selection & open inclusivity must be upheld. Those in the trial have rights to privacy & respect & can leave at any time. Once the trial is over, reveal the discoveries found. The control group receives a placebo & they must be told that they may or may not have the real potion. This is for data purposes of each group outcome. After the trials, the Minister of Magic reviews all of the research, data, & discoveries of the potion, as it is legally required to do so. An ethical theory that is important is knowing what information must be acknowledged before & after the trials end.

Fun Facts
You must always use your own ideas & never copy or plagiarize another's research. To authenticate your work, correctly document your theory & how you plan on doing your research.
Be sure to have informed consent & disclose all risks, benefits, side effects, & dangers.
Anyone involved in the research cannot review its findings, as it creates bias judgment.
If you find yourself being influenced in being in a trial, contact the Minister of Magic.
