Lesson Two: Ethics in Ingredients Study Guide

Chapter 3

Be aware that animal-based ingredients are farmed & harvested only for the purpose of potion making. Diagon Alley & Hogsmeade are a good place to buy ingredients where farmed items are regulated. When harvesting in its natural environment, over-harvesting & ecological issues are a cause of concern. For example, fire crab shells are used for make-shift cauldrons. Poachers for these shells eventually made fire crabs endangered due to harvesting a high amount of crabs. By hunting recklessly, you are effecting the species & the ecosystem. Bat blood & spleen are used for sleeping potions & were harvested in their natural environment. Due to hunting recklessly & because the bats are insectivores, insects in that ecosystem were at an insane level. Insect-borne sickness grew in 1923. Today, the Minister of Magic watches out for over-harvesting the ecosystems.

When using animal-based ingredients, it is achievable to harvest without hurting the animal. For example, wait for the Jobberknoll's feathers to fall out naturally to use in truth & memory potions. Unicorn manes are harvested while it is still alive & its horn is harvested when the unicorn sheds it to make way for another. If the unicorn has passed away due to natural causes, it is not a bad thing to collect its horn. Class A Non-Tradeable Materials consists of chimaera eggs, Acromantula eggs, & dragon eggs. As a healer, make your patient aware of what ingredients you will use for the potion at all times. This is a precaution in case the patient is allergic to an ingredient. Allergy reactions can vary between mild to death. At times, brewing the ingredients may change the form of the ingredient just enough that the patient may not experience any reactions.

Fun Facts
In the United Kingdom, farmed animals such as puffer fish eyes & dragonfly thoraxes have bylaws for animal quality of life.
Unicorns are to never be harmed, though their hair is used to create wands & its horn is used in the Antidote to Common Poisons.
Always list the ingredients of your brewed potion on the bottle of phial.
Anyone who is caught selling or purchasing Non-Tradeable Materials can be looking at hefty charges or even prison time.
