Lesson Nine: Pills & Potions Study Guide
Chapter 11
This lesson is not included in the final exam. This is just a bit of information from the lesson.
Healers & researchers for healing concoctions date back to five thousand years ago, in the Mesopotamia Era. The Asipu was in control of discovering diseases & aided in emotional support. They were not potioneers but rather exorcists, however today we see them as wizards who practiced Asiputu. The Asu are known for using plasters to treat wounds & to create mundane & magical mixtures to aid in healing. In Egypt, their priests practiced divination & healing & they considered potions to be the last thing to use. The Egyptians always labelled their concoctions with ingredients instead of a name. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around since two thousand years ago & they focused mainly on herbology & potions. In the Mayan community, priests were divine healers & discovered many ingredients. Cacao was discovered by the Mayas as a potion ingredient.
In African Zulu practice, an Isangoma was in control of treating illnesses & used divination to seek a diagnosis. Inyanga was used in place of an Isangoma to treat illnesses with potions. Some believe this type of magic was a form of the Dark Arts. In New Zealand, magical & mundane communities lived together. Wizards held the power throughout these communities, especially priests, since they were considered to have connections to the spirits & gods. Often, these leaders would exploit these connections for more power. The magical families that settled had their own healing concoctions & the Maori gained attraction for a few hundred years after. In New Orleans, the Native Americans were the first magical people to settle. In the Muggle population, they see New Orleans as the place of Dark Art magic, though in reality the magical population sees themselves as potioneers of luck, protection, & healing.
