The Journey to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

Chapter 4

The next few months passed quickly. Hermione had memorized her text books as well as a few others. She constantly had her nose stuck in a magical book and learned as much as she could. It was September 1st which ment today was the day she left for Hogwarts. It was slightly chilly out so Hermione decided to wear a red sweater for the journey. She'd read in one of her books that she was to wear muggle clothing and change on the train. Hermione had packed her trunk the day before, she could barely fit all her books in. At the moment she was writing H.G. In her robes she was going to change into on the train. She threw them into her school bag when she was finished then moved on to attempt to tame her wild hair. Hermione hoped desperately there was a spell it fix hair, though she doubted they would teach it in class. After a few minutes she gave up and dragged her trunk into the Granger's living room.  "Morning dear," her father gave her a nod, he'd be taking her to the platform because her mother had an early appointment. She checked her watch, 10:12, they really should get going. Hermione slipped her shoes on that she'd placed in front of the door the night before. "Come on dad!" She whined, throwing her school bag over her shoulder. Hermione's father smiled widely at his daughter's enthusiasm. He stood up, already wearing his shoes and coat. He pat his fluffy haired daughter on the head before helping her load her trunk into the Granger's car. Hermione climbed into the passenger seat, she took a book out of her school bag but the book was snatched up by her father. "No, for once I want you to not look at a book. I'm not gonna see my little girl for months!" He finished his statement by booping his daughter on the nose with his finger. Hermione smiled back at her father. When they arrived at Kings Cross Station Hermione's father pulled her trunk out of the back of the Granger's car. Hermione wheeled it up to the wall between platforms 9 and 10. "You have to trust me, we're going to run strait at this walk and it'll take us to the platform." Hermione said to her father looking into his dull brown eyes, she saw the skepticism in them but said nothing else. She took a deep breath and ran straight at the wall, she braced herself for the crash, but it didn't come. She burst into a platform buzzing with people, young and old alike. A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts' Express, eleven o'clock. Hermione looked behind herself and saw a wrought-iron archway where the barrier had been, with the words Platform Nine and Three-Quarters on it. Hermione pushes her trunk onto the train and down several full compartments. She pushed it down to the second carriage where the was a carriage with young blonde girl in it, the girl was reading a book Hermione knew well, Hogwarts a History. The girl looked up, her pale blue eyes meeting Hermione's chocolate brown ones. "Mione!" Piper flung her arms around Hermione, she hugged her tightly before the two sat back down and began talking about Hogwarts. Hermione changed into her Hogwarts robes, while they talked about the textbooks they had both read many times. A plump boy burst into their compartment, "Have you seen my toad?" Hermione looked at Piper who shrugged, "No we haven't, would you like help looking for him?"  The boy nodded, "Yes please, my name's Neville." She smiled kindly at the Neville, "I'm Hermione Granger, pleasure to meet you."  Hermione and Neville left the compartment and entered another one not far from Hermione and Piper's. There were two boys inside surrounded with candy wrappers. Both were rather thin, one with messy jet black hair and broken glasses. The other was covered in freckles, fiery red hair and a rat in his lap.   "Has anyone seen a toad? Neville's lost one," the red haired boy was the one to speak, Hermione noticed he had his wand out. If you could call it that, the old wand had chucks out of it and white hair was poking out the end. This distracted Hermione from helping Neville with his toad. She knew the boy said something but she wasn't listening, "Oh, are you doing magic? Let's see it, then." Hermione took a seat across from the boy, who looked stunned.  "Er- all right", the boy cleared his throat. Waving his wand he said, "Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid fat rat yellow." The rat on his lap was still fast asleep and still grey.   "Are you sure that's a real spell?" Hermione cut in, "Well, it's not very good is it? I've tried tried a few simple spells just for practice and it's all worked for me. Nobody in my family's magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it's the very best school of witchcraft there is, I've heard -- I've learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough -- I'm Hermione Granger, you are?" Hermione knew she was rambling like always but the boys didn't seem to mind or care. The boys exchanged looked before turning back to Hermione. "I'm Ron, Ron Weasley," the red haired boy said , his mouth still full. "Harry Potter," the black haired boy, who had been silent until now. "Are you really?" She asked breathlessly. "I know all about you, of course -- I got a few extra books, for background reading, and you're in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century." "Am I?" said Harry, he looked confused. "Goodness, didn't you know, I'd have found out everything I could if it was me," she responded. "Do either of you know what house you'll be in? I've been asking around, and I hope I'm in Gryffindor, it sounds by far the best; I hear Dumbledore himself was in it, but I suppose Ravenclaw wouldn't be too bad... Anyway, we'd better go and look for Neville's toad. You two had better change, you know, I expect we'll be arriving soon."  Hermione left their compartment, she'd read so about the Hogwarts houses as well as talked to Piper about it. She and Neville asked around sevral more apartments before Neville slumped into an empty one, "He's gone!" Hermione gave him a faint smile, "I'm sure you'll find him Neville, don't worry." "Thanks for the help," Neville smiled back and began rummaging through his trunk , pulling out his Hogwarts robes. Hermione gave him a nod and returned to her compartment, Piper was reading when she entered. "Did you find the toad?" "No, I'm going to go ask how much longer till we're there." She left the compartment again, she had to dodge the kids who were running up and down the corridors. When she finally got to the front she spotted the conductor, "Excuse me, how much longer till we get to Hogwarts." Hermione asked politely. The conductor looked angry, "Ten minutes, out!" He yelled at Hermione, obviously irritated. She back out slowly, slightly flustered. While she was walking back to her compartment she saw the platinum blonde not she'd seen in the book shop running out of a compartment two large boys running after him, one was holding his hand in pain. Hermione peeked into the compartment they had run from, it was Ron and Harry's. Ron was saying something about the dark side when he looked at Hermione.   "Can I help you with something?" He grumbled. "You'd better hurry up and put your robes on, I've just been up to the front to ask the conductor, and he says we're nearly there. You haven't been fighting, have you? You'll be in trouble before we even get there!" Hermione glanced around the compartment for any signs of fighting. "Scabbers has been fighting, not us," said Ron, scowling at her. "Would you mind leaving while we change?" She didn't know who Scabbers was but there was no signs of fighting, she assumed that Scabbers was the rat Ron was holding. "All right -- I only came in here because people outside are behaving very childishly, racing up and down the corridors," said Hermione. "And you've got dirt on your nose, by the way, did you know?" She put her finger on her own nose where it was on his. Ron attempted to run the dirt off but it was still there. Hermione rolled her eyes and left the compartment, returning to her own. A voice echoed through the train: "We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes' time. Please leave your luggage on the train, it will be taken to the school separately."  Hermione packed up her books as did Piper. The train slowed right down and finally stopped. People pushed their way toward the door and out on to a tiny, dark platform. Piper and Hermione finally got into the platform when she heard a loud scruffy voice: "Firs' years! Firs' years over here! All right there, Harry?" Hermione followed the voice, eventually there was a small group of young kids all about the same age. She spotted Ron and Harry in the crowed, they were now dressed in the same black Hogwarts robes as everyone else, Ron still had dirt on his nose. "C'mon, follow me -- any more firs' years? Mind yer step, now! Firs' years follow me!" Slipping and stumbling, they followed a huge man down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path. It was so dark on either side of them seeming there must be thick trees there. Nobody spoke much. Neville, sniffed once or twice. "Yeh'll get yer firs' sight o' Hogwarts in a sec," the large man called over his shoulder, "jus' round this bend here." There was a loud "Oooooh!" The narrow path had opened suddenly onto the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers. "No more'n four to a boat!" the man called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in the water by the shore. Harry and Ron loaded into a boat, since they were the only people she knew other than Piper she climbed into it. She expected Piper to also climb in but the other girl had gotten lost in the crowd. Instead, Neville stepped into it. "Everyone in?" shouted the man, who had a boat to himself. "Right then -- FORWARD!" And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood. "Heads down!" yelled the man as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and the little boats carried them through a curtain of ivy that hid a wide opening in the cliff face. They were carried along a dark tunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until they reached a kind of underground harbor, where they clambered out onto rocks and pebbles. "Oy, you there! Is this your toad?" said the man, who was checking the boats as people climbed out of them. "Trevor!" cried Neville blissfully, holding out his hands. Then they clambered up a passageway in the rock after the man's lamp, coming out at last onto smooth, damp grass right in the shadow of the castle. They walked up a flight of stone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door. "Everyone here? You there, still got yer toad?" The man raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle door.
