The Girl Who Knew

Chapter 1

Hermione Granger knew everything there was to know about anything. She was chatting happily with her father about lions while the two walked to the Granger's mailbox. Her father opened it and began thumbing through the letters while Hermione kept talking. When her father got to the last letter his gaze rested on one addressed to his daughter. The bright green letters were very vibrant against the cream white envelope. He handed it to Hermione, "For you my dear,".

She took the letter, confusion dawning on her face. "But, I never get any mail." She flipped the letter over, on the back of it was a red seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H. Her hands trembling, she broke the seal and pulled out a piece of paper. No, it wasn't paper, it had a yellow tint and was very stiff. Parchment! She remembered reading about it, but why would someone be sending her something on parchment? Slowly she unfolded the letter, she read it aloud to her father. "Dear Miss Granger, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1st. We await your owl by no later than July 31st. Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress." Hermione breathed deeply and looked at her father, "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? What's that?" As if on cue, a near by tabby cat with strange markings on its face walked over to Hermione and her father. The cat rubbed around their ankles then looked toward the door to the Granger's house. Her father picked up the cat, who struggled against his grip. "Looks like a stray, come on, we'll get it some food." He said and strolled back to the door of the house, Hermione on his heels. Once they entered the house the cat finally broke free of Hermione's fathers grip. It jumped to the floor and ran into the hallway that led to Hermione's bedroom. She ran after that cat, rounding the corner her mouth fell open. Instead of the tabby cat she had expected to see, a full grown woman in an emerald-green outfit stood before her. The woman looked old with age, her gray hair done neatly but was hidden under and large black hat. Hermione had never seen anything like what the woman was wearing. The woman was shaking her head and muttering something alone the lines of, "Stupid Mugs?" The woman then raised her head and looked at Hermione, "Ah! Miss Granger, good to finally meet you, I am Minerva McGonagall." Hermione thought for a second, she hand heard that name before. "Wait, you sent me this letter?" She asked the woman, lifting the torn open letter slightly to indicate it. Hermione's father rounded the same corner, a bowl of milk in his hands. He looked at the woman standing at the end of the hallway, Crash! Hermione jumped back as her father dropped the bowl he had been holding.  "For havens sake!" The woman screeched, she pulled a stick looking thing out of her strange clothing. She waved the stick and the bowl somehow floated in the air and fixed itself, the milk returning to the bowl. It floated past Hermione and her father, around the corner, and landed on the kitchen counter. Her father managed to mumble, "M-Mag.. Magic!" The woman returned the stick to her clothes, "That is exactly what it is Mr. Granger, if you'd like we can sit down and I shall explain everything." Hermione was speechless, for the first time since she learned to talk. Her father left the hallway and pulled out a chair from the dinning room table, he sat down in it. Hermione didn't move, she wasn't sure what to think about this whole thing, then she remembered she was still holding the letter. She lifted it and her eyes darted around the parchment again. The woman passed her and sat across her father at the table, out of the corner of her eye she could see him waving for her to sit next to him. Hermione did as she was instructed, sitting down next to her father and looking at the woman.  It was nearly an hour before the woman, Professor McGonagall, stopped talking. She told Hermione and her father all about this other world, a wizarding world. She had many questions but suppressed them all. Professor McGonagall stood up from the chair straightening what Hermione learned were robes. That's what wizards and witches wore and what she would wear while she would attend Hogwarts. "I bid you farewell, it's a bit late so tomorrow I shall stop by and take you to Diagon Ally to get your school supplies." Professor McGonagall said, Hermione merely blinked and the woman was a cat again. She opened the Granger's front door and the cat scurried out.  While watching the cat scurry away Hermione's mother was outside the door, "Don't tell me your father's been feeding strays again." Hermione laughed, she wasn't sure what to say so she held the door for her mother. Her father smiled and kissed his wife in the cheek as she entered. Hermione screwed up her face, gross, she was never EVER going to kiss anyone. Once the groceries that her mother had bought were put away her father was the first to speak about their visit from the strange woman. He explained what had happened to her mother, Hermione was only there for a short part of it. She went down the hallway and into her room. There has to be something about this world in one of her books. She pulled ten or so books off the large shelf in her bedroom, she went through them until her father knocked on the door. "Come in!" The door slowly opened, her father walked into the room and sat down on her bed. "You better get ready to go to sleep, big day tomorrow." He said, his dull brown eyes meeting his daughters. "Already?" Hermione sighed , she still hasn't found anything about this wizarding world. "Yes, now hurry along," her father stood up and left her room, closing the door behind him. She rolled her eyes and got up from the bed, sulking over to her dresser she changed into her pajamas. Then walked into her bathroom, grabbing her hair brush and began to brush her hair. She hated how puffy her hair was, it was barely manageable. She put her brush down and grabbed her toothbrush, another thing she hated about her appearance, her large front teeth. Putting a pea sized amount of toothpaste on her toothbrush she brushed her teeth. One, two, three.. She counted to 120 and spit into the sink, she rinsed off her toothbrush and walked back to her bedroom. She turned off her light and flopped down on her bed, closing her eyes she imagined the wizarding world and quickly fell asleep.
