It's a Definite Kind of Love (A Blackinnon Fanfiction)

written by Jui Weasley

Ever since that one kiss, something had changed between them. They were more comfortable with each other. They cared for each other (mostly... sometimes... 70% of the time... 60%...) They actually tried hard for each other. This is the story of Sirius Black and Marlene McKinnon. WARNING: There are mentions of violence in this story. The Dance (Part 2)

Chapter 23

"You look stunning, Mar," said Alice with a squeal, putting up Marlene's hair into a loose but elegant bun.

"You really think it's not too much?" asked Marlene nervously, fingering the edge of her green dress.

"It's perfect, Mar," said Lily soothingly, fixing up her own hair. "It matches you."

"Thanks, you two," said Marlene gratefully.

"Well, I should head out," said Marlene, dusting off her dress. "Gideon's probably waiting."

"Why'd you say yes to that annoying git anyways?" asked Lily. "He tried to ask me our once- just goes around the whole school asking EVERYONE- and I mean EVERYONE."

Marlene shrugged. "He just seemed like a bit of a hopeless romantic- thought I ought to give him some confidence before he meets the true love of his life."

"You're so kind, Marlene," said Alice gently.

"Thanks, Al," said Marlene with a grin. "You're wonderful too."

She waved to them and headed down the common room in her flowy dress.

"Hiya, Marlene," said Gideon with a wave. "You look nice."

"Thank you, Gideon," said Marlene politely. "You look very nice as well."

"Are we heading right up, or do you wanna wait for your friends?" asked Gideon kindly.

"It was very kind of you to ask, and yes, I think I should wait for my friends to come downstairs, if you don't mind."

"I don't mind at all."

Gideon's gaze skipped over Marlene and went to another Gryffindor girl around the same age who looked like she was just going to the dance for fun, and not with a particular date.

Marlene saw this and grinned. "Someone caught your eye, Gideon?"

Gideon blushed. "No- I mean-"

"It's alright, you know," said Marlene with a chuckle. "I think you should use some of that confidence to ask her out."

"You think so?"

"Definitely," giggled Marlene. "Go on- you got this."

"But-" added Gideon. "If she does say yes- who'll you go to the dance with?"

"The snack table is a wonderful waltzer."

Gideon laughed. "Thanks for the advice, by the way. Have fun."

"You too," said Marlene, smiling to herself.

The dance itself was not so enjoyable for Marlene- or for Sirius, for that matter.

Let's go over to Sirius for a second.

"Should we grab something to drink?" asked the kind girl, Lana, who had asked Sirius to the dance. "All this dancing is making me hot."

Sirius nodded, his mind still not completely focused on Lana's words.

Lana scrunched up her eyebrows. "It's about Marlene, isn't it?"

"What?" said Sirius, temporarily broken from his reverie.

Lana chuckled. "See? Why don't you two get back together? You're clearly in love."

"Maybe me. Not her," said Sirius under his breath.

Lana heard this and pursed her lips. There was silence. "I saw her," she said. "The entire week it happened, in the girls bathroom, sobbing her poor heart out. She really cares for you, Sirius. I don't even know what this stupid break-up was about, in all honesty."

"She cheated, Lana, it's not as simple as an apology," said Sirius grumpily.

"Her?" said Lana unsurely. "Marlene? That kind and sweet-hearted soul who helps me with my homework everyday and comforts me when someone bullies me for being a different race than some? She really cares for other people, Sirius. Marlene wouldn't do something as bad as that."

Sirius thought about her words. "Lana-" he said with a solemn expression. "Do you think I should go talk to he-"

"YES."

"Do you real-"

"I WILL HEX YOU IF YOU DON'T. NOW GO TALK WITH HER." Lana sounded very threatening in this conversation, losing her regular kind and sweet disposition.

"Ok, ok, chill," said Sirius, holding out his hands. "I'm going."

He walked off the dance floor and towards Marlene.

"Marlene?" Sirius said quietly, not meeting her eyes. "I'd like to talk with you."

Marlene looked at him for a long while. "Ok. But not here- there are some idiot people ready for the gossip."

She held Sirius' wrist gently and pulled him towards a empty classroom.

Sirius decided to ignore the familiar tingle in his skin when Marlene touched his hands.

"Ok," said Marlene with a long sigh. "Shoot."
