Introduction

Chapter 1

EQUIPMENT:

  • A von Rheticus model magical telescope is required for the course, beginning from the third lesson this year.

TERMINOLOGY:

  • Astronomy refers to the study of the universe. This includes various topics including the observation of celestial bodies, the possible formation of objects in outer space, and the determination of the chemical configuration of these numerous features.

  • Astrology is a major subfield of astronomy, and refers to the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies. These features are interpreted as having an influence on the happenings of people on Earth and the natural world.

  • The term observational astronomy focuses primarily on identifying objects in outer space though a variety of sources and methods.

  • However, the term theoretical astronomy focuses on the application of technology and astronomical concepts to explain and calculate the measurable implications of physical models.

MAGICAL ASTRONOMERS:

  • The magical approach to astronomy focuses primarily on magic-based theories and the magical effects of the universe.

  • Witches and wizards are less proficient than Muggles in regards to observational astronomy. This is because magic has a tendency to interfere with most of the technology they use to collect and observe their research.

  • Hogwarts castle is not capable of utilising electricity, as the magic is too powerful. Additionally, a large quantity of the magical population reject any form of non-magical science or technology.

  • Magical astronomers are highly efficient at applied astronomy. They are strongly interested in the ways in which the happenings in outer space directly impact the magical ways of life.

MUGGLE ASTRONOMERS:

  • In high contrast, Muggles view astronomy through a more logical and scientific perspective, and are highly efficient at both observational and theoretical astronomy.

  • The majority of observational discoveries are introduced by Muggles. They are also responsible for the formation of most theoretical concepts throughout the non-magical astronomical topics.

  • From a Muggles' perspective, the field of astrology is seen as only a myth. This is because witches and wizards have had to alter the history of this specific field of astronomy seen by Muggles in an effort to keep magic a secret from the rest of the non-magical population.
