Pick up Quidditch

written by Lilac Inber

I thought I'd write a system for playing Quidditch games Asynchronous on HiH. If you are interested in playing check out my group: https://www.hogwartsishere.com/groups/71373/

Simple Quidditch rules

Chapter 2

Simple Quidditch rules

The game is run by a Referee or Announcer.
They will state that sign ups are open and what which teams are playing, for the time being pick-up quidditch will ignore houses and the two teams will be the Dragons and the Unicorns. Once the teams are complete (or the annoucer decides otherwise) the time of the game will be annouced. From the start time of the game players will have at least 24 hours (the annoucer will say what when this time limit ends.) to Owl the announcer how they player will play duing the game by selecting one of the moves listed below. Once all moved have been receved by the announcer (or the time has elapsed) the announce will report the outcome of the game.

Chaser moves

  • Defence (defends 1 goal)

  • Offence (attempts 1 goal)

  • Agressive offence (attempts 2 goals)

Keeper moves

  • Defence (blocks 1/3 of goals)

  • Aggressive defence (blocks 2/3 of goals)

Beater moves

  • Defence (name two teammates to defend)

  • Targetted Offence (name one opponent to attack)

  • Opportunistic Offence (will automatically hit up to two 'Aggressive' players)

Example

Unicorns

  • Chaser 1 offence

  • Chaser 2 offence

  • Chaser 3 offence

  • Keeper defence

Dragons

  • Chaser 1 offence

  • Chaser 2 defence

  • Chaser 3 aggressive offence

  • Keeper agressive defence

The unicorns attempt 3 goals, Chaser 2 defends one of them, leaving 2, the keeper then defends 2/3s of them 2*2/3 is 1.333 so the keeper blocks one goal.
The unicorns score one goal.

The Dragons attempt 3 goals the unicorns keeper blocks 1/3 of them 3/3 is 1 so the keeper blocks one goal.
The dragons score two goals.

Now to include beaters

Unicorns

  • Beater 1 defend chaser 1 and chaser 2

  • Beater 2 opportunistic offence

Dragons

  • Beater 1 attack chaser 1

  • Beater 2 opportunistic offence

The Dragons first beater does nothing because chaser 1 is defended.

The Dragons second beater does not see any openings.

The unicorns second beater oppotunitically hits both the the dragons third chaser, and the dragons keeper.

The unicorns make three attempts on goal, one blocked by the dragons second chaser, the others uncontested as the dragons keeper was put out by a bludgers.
Two goals to the unicorns.

The dragons attempt one goal, and which the keeper fails to block (1/3 is 0.333).
One goal to the dragons.

Notes on application

Chasers attempt to block or score a number of goals. Total goals equals the number of attempts minus the number of defends.

The keeper then blocks a percentage of goals, this is rounded to the nearest whole number. See below table for effect.

Beaters have the potential to completely remove a player's move from the game, or protect a player from a beater. Oppotunitistic offence allows a beater to removed up to two players who are playing agressively (That is players who are focused on scoring or blocking and not on where the bludges are.) however if there are no players playing agressively then they will not find an opening to do anything.

In a targetted offence the Beater chooses a single opponent to target and removed their effect from the game unless they are defended by one of their own beaters.

And finally a beater can chose to defend up to two of their own players for targetted attacks, note agressive players cannot be defended from oppotunitsitic attacks.

For now I'm choosing to leave the seeker out as I cannot think of a way to include them other than as a random roll. If I write more complex rules I'll include the seeker.
