Chapter 7

After all our normal lessons were finished, we headed out to our first flying lesson. We had been put with the Gryffindors.

Madam Hooch, the flying teacher, had brroms laying on the ground, which we had to stand next to.

She then told us to stretch out our hand and say 'Up!'

As soon as I did so, my broom flew straight up into my hand. Harry's did the same thing, and he glared at me.

Probably because I'd spoiled his little moment of triumph.

Anyway, Dean's, Blaise's, Anja's and Hermione's brooms all rolled over. Draco's rose slowly into the air before dropping to the ground when it was halfway up. He didn't look very pleased.

Eventually, we had all mounted our broomsticks.

Madam Hooch informed us that she would count to three, and once she said three we should all kick hard off the ground.

"One-Two-"

Neville Longbottom rose into the air, straight up.

He'd seemed quite clumsy before; after all, he had run off the seat for the Sorting with the Hat still on his head.

The broom then decided that it had had enough time in the air and decided to fall to the ground instead. Straight down, in fact.

Neville hit the ground with an ominous thud.

Madam Hooch immediately ran over to Neville and then, telling us not to fly, took him to the infirmary.

Neville had left a ball - I think it was a Remembrall - on the ground where he had fallen. Draco, for some reason unknown to all, picked it up and flew off with it.

I had heard a lot about Draco from Pansy and Millicent. His father was extremely strict, causing Draco to have an unkind personality. And, apparently, he could also get quite dangerous.

So, naturally, Harry, being the hero that he was, decided that he was going to go and get it. He flew up to Draco - his flying wasn't all that bad, actually - and they had an argument. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but their expressions amde it obvious enough.

I knew Draco could attack Harry at any time, so I flew up to warn him.

"Oh, no! Don't do that, Jade!" Anja called. I shook my head at her.

When I reached Harry and Draco, Harry turned around.

"Trying to get involved, are we, Edwards? I think I can handle Malfoy on my own, thanks," he sneered.

"Oh, I'm not so sure about that. On last name terms, are we now, Potter?" I sneered back.

Draco looked bored of the conversation.

He threw the Remembrall.

And all I was thinking was, Neville will be needing that.

And I flew. I snapped a branch off the tree Draco and Harry were still hovering in front of, and sped after the Remembrall.

I had no idea how I could fly so well, since it was my first time.

I was just trying to slow it down, not catch it -  I knew I couldn't do that. But when I hit it with the branch, it spun and then began plummeting down to earth.

Now it'll be my fault it breaks! I thought angrily at the Remembrall.

But then I remembered Draco and Harry.

Draco would be willing to just stand back on the ground - he had landed already - and laugh.

But Harry wouldn't. Heroic Harry wouldn't let that thing smash.

He whizzed off after it and, somehow, caught it.

But when we landed, we were greeted by an unpleasant surprise.

Professor McGonagall.

And she was furious. She basically yelled at us for 5 minues about how dangerous that was and told us to follow her.

We followed her. She led us to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

"Could I borrow Wood and Flint, please?" she asked Quirrell.

He nodded in confusion.

Don't you need wood and flint to start a fire?

Had we really misbehaved so badly we were going to be burnt to death?

Apparently not, since a couple of older boys came out of the room.

"Excellent. Wood, I've found you a new Seeker," she said, indicating Harry.

So these were Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor Quidditch Team captain, and Marcus Fint, Slytherin's equivalent.

"And Flint, I've found you a new Beater," she added, indicating me.

What?

Me, a Beater?

Wood stared at Harry and Flint stared at me.

For about half an hour.

And then Harry and I grinned at each other.

We may have been enemies, but we were in the same boat. And then I frowned, remembering the rule that first-years aren't allowed broomsticks.

Harry clearly remembered too, because he asked Professor McGonagall about it.

"Oh, don't you worry, I'm sure we can make an exception for you two,"she told us, smiling, "but only tell your closest friends."

As soon as we were released and sent back to our common rooms, Harry turned to me.

"I thought for certain we'd get expelled, didn't you? And all thanks to Malfoy, too!" he said happily.

"Yeah. But instead, we're the first Quidditch players of our age in a century! But it's Draco, not Malfoy," I corrected.

He shrugged. "Who cares? Who is he to you?"

"Exactly what Dean and Seamus are to you," I replied coldly. "A housemate."

"Oh."

"You idiot!"

There we go, back to enemies again.

YAY!

Harry glared at me one last time, then ran off.

When I entered the Common Room, Blaise was sitting there, looking worried. As soon as he saw me, he jumped up.

"Were you expelled?"

"No." I explained what had happened. "...So basically, Harry's now the Gryffindor Seeker and I'm one of our two Beaters."

Blaise's mouth fell open.

I laughed.

"And all I had to do was send that Remembrall flying through the air using a tree branch," I added.

"But-but-but- you're a first year! You must be the first Quidditch player of your age in about a century! Other than Harry, of course."

"Yeah, basically," I agreed.

Then Flint, our highly intelligent Quidditch captain (so smart that Crabbe and Goyle could probably beat him in a test), walked into the Common Room.

He nodded to me. "Edwards. 7:30 tonight, out at the Quidditch pitch. I want to see why McGonagall chose you. You're getting thrown out if you aren't good enough, I don't accept girls into my team normally."

I looked at the clock in the room. 7:30.

Blaise decided that he would like to come watch me, so we headed down to the pitch to wait.

But when we got there, The Most Amazing Person In The Whole Universe was standing there, practising with Oliver Wood.

Harry Potter.

So we ended up watching him repeatedly catch the Snitch, which got extremely boring extremely quickly.

Anyway, they finally finished practice and left the pitch, not noticing us in the seats.

A short while later, Flint turned up.

Mr Highly Intelligent decided he was going to throw both Bludgers into the air before giving me my broom.

Naturally, they attacked me before I even got into the air.

About 5 minutes of me flying away from the Bludgers, Flint FINALLY decided to give me the bat.

I hit the Bludgers away quite easily.

Flint was impressed, but that wasn't saying much.

"Yeah, you can stay on the team," he grunted. "I'll kick out Morison, he's never had much of a brain."

Look who's talking! I wanted to point out.

We finished at 8:00 pm, and went back to the Common Room.

I went up to my dormitory and read the Daily Prophet, as Professor Snape had told me.

It turned out that something had almost been stolen from Gringotts, but it didn't say what.

After that, I didn't have anything to do, so I fell asleep.
